Here's how to make your own 120GB PS3 and save yourself the extra money of paying for the inferior 80GB version:

step 1: buy a 60GB PS3 for $500

step 2: buy a 120GB 2.5" Western Digital hard drive on newegg for $70

step 3: install said hard drive:

step 4: enjoy your new 120GB PS3 and the warm feelings from saving yourself some $$$

EDIT: It turns out that the HD in the PS3 is a SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive, so make sure you don't buy a hard drive with an ATA-6 connection. The one I link to above is actually ATA-6. Sorry for the mixup, but there are several more HD's further down that others have linked to, so check those out.

but the 80gb ps3 comes also with motorstorm which costs $59.99...so its actually cheaper to get the 80gb version if you want the game motorstorm

but if you just wanted a 80gb HDD then you should be happy with 60gb ...
if you want a 120gb HDD or 160gb HDD you still have to buy a new HDD ...

I wondered that myself, but the article I linked to for installation doesn't mention any problems. It does say that upon the first boot with the new HD the PS3 will format it for you, so I would imagine that the OS is stored on a separate back-up. This would also make sense as a fail-safe in case the original HD failed. I'm going to see if I can find a definitive answer to this later.

EDIT: I just found another video here that I think will answer your questions. It shows step by step the installation process and what to expect with the first boot up. The PS3 started normally upon the first boot, prompting me to stick with my earlier conclusion about the OS. Hope this helps. Also, this link will take you to another step-by-step installation (w/pics).

I just wanted to clarify one thing about buying a new HD for the PS3 so that there's no confusion. Make absolute sure you get a 2.5" laptop HD that uses a SATA (Serial ATA) interface. Good brands to look for are Seagate and Western Digital. Also, I've read that it's best to stick with 5400rpm hard drives. Apparently the 7200rpm laptop drives put out lots more heat and could possibly cause problems with your PS3.

Okay, I'm gonna start off by asking why nobody else had thought to post this topic to the forum days ago; it's a great idea. That having been said, I have a question. I didn't get a chance to watch the video linked above, but from what I'm reading, you are all talking about actually replacing the hd IN the console. That's perfectly fine, but couldn't you buy a hd and then just connect it to the system with a regular old USB 2.0 cable? If you're just gonna be saving music and movies and whatnot, wouldn't that work just as well without having to go through all the hassle of opening up the system. Please, feel free to point out the flaws in my logic because I would love to be able wrap my head around this one.

^ You mean an external hard drive? I am also wondering this, and other people said that it will work, but do you plug it in and your done? Or do you have to format it? Also its a great idea to put a new hard drive in yourself and save money.

As far as I know, pretty much any external USB HD will work. External hard drives are a great way to add space without worrying about replacing the internal hard drive. Also, when you start getting above 200GB, it gets MUCH cheaper to buy an external hard drive than to find a 2.5" internal one. Heck, if you wanted to you could probably hook up a couple of TB external HD's. With external, the sky's the limit on how much space you want to add. I'll try to find a link that goes into more detail on this topic later.

EDIT: From the looks of this forum posting I found, you have to first format your external HD to FAT32. Also of note: it appears from the linked discussion that the max file size recognizable by the PS3 is 4GB, so unfortunately uncompressed movie files greater than that will not pop up on your HD even if it's formatted properly.

Here is a link to an article that will help you go about formatting an external HD to FAT32 for use with your PS3 (or Mac or Linux).

EDIT: Also, from further investigation it seems like there is an excecutable in windows that will allow you to format a HD to FAT32, but apparently it only works for partitions 32GB or smaller. Sounds like you're better off going with third party programs to format your external HD.

EDIT: Here is another link for Vista users that should help formatting a drive to FAT32 if the first link didn't work.

You guys might be able to find some sweet deals on HardForums. If you've never heard of it, it's a huge forum built for computer nerds. They sell a bunch of stuff in the ForSale/ForTrade forums from users (you should get a membership [free] if you wanna contact them if they dont provide email). In their [H]ot Deals forum, there are posted deals on electronic devices. Every once in awhile (especially around holidays) there are posted deals (and messups) where you can save BIG on things like laptop HDDs.

I'm not sure about keeping saved games and profiles. There are ways to transfer files from your ps3 to a pc (not sure if this applies to saved games/profiles). Just google "transferring files from ps3 to pc" and you'll find several articles. As for getting your PS3 HD to run on a PC, it is possible to buy an enclosure for your old PS3 HD, such as this, so that you can use your PS3 HD on your comp. Also, it might just be easier to go with the external enclosure and leave your old HD hooked up via USB, but then again that kind of defeats the whole purpose of changing the HD if you're going to leave an external one hooked up.
