These days in games industry there are a lot of downloadable content (DLCs) and there are always or often not for free. of course these DLCs are different from game to another, sometimes its an addition to the story so you would understand it more and sometimes its additional maps or modes in Multiplayer or even new weapons. There are some pros and cons in DLCs in my opinion I will talk about them from a player view ,so lets get to them .

Pros :

There are some pros in DLCs specially when the game developer gets new ideas about the game while its already came out so he can add them as a DLCs, he can gain profit from it and entertain the player. Also in mMultiplayer if you get bored from the maps you have and the modes then you can buy a DLC for new maps,modes,new weapons or new features that make you more interested in the game like what Call of Duty for example does.

And like I said the DLCs are different from one game to another, some may give you new cloths or characters like in Assassin's creed black flag or some will give an addition to the story from another angle like in The Last of US.

Cons :

Everything has some pros and cons and when it comes to DLCs one of the main cons is that some DLCs are really add something to the game and worth the money while some DLCs are not. Also some games developers may remove some chapters or make the game end in some point so you need to buy the DLC for the missing chapters or to understand the game more, while it should be in the original game already and you shouldn't make the player pay again for it. And don't let me start talking about multiplayer thats another story, like when a developer save some ideas,maps or even weapons that make them in the game are so few then you need to buy DLCs again to have them.

In summary I'm not against DLCs but the games developers need to make them worth the money and not just remove things from the original game but to add things to it because we already paying $60 for it. And specially now because almost every game has to come with DLCs.

look at the pictures below it describes the way before and now and hopefully not tomorrow :)

Developers know that gamers are not normal consumers and they also know that we are informed and what our expectations are with the final product. So any attempt on their part to give us a half ass product in order to milk us with DLC would be meant with SERIOUS repercussions.

So IMHO I say that DLC is a choice because unlike the casual consumer we know exactly what we want and they are well aware of that.

Really? Most people who own consoles I'd say ARE casual.

MMOs like DCUO and WOW release mundane rehashed crap over and over yet people buy em. Grinding is grinding OK people. After a couple months you'd think they change it up a little. Anyway, imo most DLCs are garbage and are clearly milk em dry cash grabs, yes shout-out to you Capcom. Typically what we call DLC is just stuff ported from previous games (COD maps..), a costume like really, or content that can be completed in less than 2hrs tops. DLC is a joke and only reason it exists is because developers are too broke to make AAA sequels. When they do make AAA titles, sometimes the game doesn't sell and they end up in red. So one day they discovered away to make both party's happy aka their pockets and parent company who owns their asses.

Producing low quality crap and charging the masses $15 a pop is by far a more cost effective solution. The whales will buy up anything regardless if its good or not.

You are correct, the casuals do make up a large amount of the gaming community but the hardcore gamers are still the majority!! You made some valid points in your post but the bottom line is that DLC is a choice, nobody is sticking a gun to your head!

Depends on the DLC. If it complements and enhances what was already a complete story i.e. TLOU:Left Behind, then it's great. If it continues the end of a story so as to make the original story incomplete i.e. Castlevania Lords of Shadow's Ressurection and Reverie & Prince of Persia's Epilogue then, no, it's not so great. I believe your "tomorrow" diagram illustrates "pay to play/free-to-play." I don't see the industry adopting that strategy as the standard anytime soon.

Of course it's a choice. I hate the concept of DLC it was always open to abuse by publishers and sure enough they take you to the cleaners in as many ways as they can as often as they can.

I never buy DLC. Most games I'm happy to wait a while after release and buy the game complete with all the crap they shovel out bit by bit through the year.

I like the DLC that adds new content, specifically single player content, why is this so rare now? Everygame just adds new maps to MP, which doesn't excite me much. I loved Skyrims DLC because each one is a new campaign to add lots of hours to the game. All of the COD dlc doesn't faze me, I could care less about new maps

The most disturbing part is the dlc aren't $20 anymore for season pass but some are going up to $30 and aren't just one time season pass. I think the most egregious act by publishers is the fact these dlc's were already done and could have been included in regular game as a side mission or something not included in main campaign storyline. I have only gotten a season pass for uncharted back In the day and only way I do it is if uncharted 4 is a 10/10 score. I recently got resogun pack with the pass but for a measly $4 and I was cool with it since resogun was free anyway. I will never make a habit out of paying for dlc content.

Look at gta 5. If any company should charge is them and from what I know they dont. I sold ps3 with gta 5 so not sure if they charge. Rocktar never give you junk. Look at the list of things added for July 4th.

Thank you : @MarcRecon@notorious1234na@porkchopxp@blueinheaven@SgtSutton@ewalthour for giving your ideas and thoughts :)

I see that all of you are not so acceptable for the DLCs idea so why a major company as Ubisoft is saying that depending on studies, players are more acceptable for the DLCs idea?!!!!

and why all games developers are pushing them in almost every game?!!!!

you think they dont make enough money from the game so they have to do it??? or what???

do they listen to players or the pretend or listen to what they want to listen to???

I don't even have to read any of this long thread to answer your title. DLC is a choice, you don't have to buy it and they aren't forcing you to. You can choose to buy it or not duhhh.

@philip6k

first of all : you dont need to say duhhh to make your point, either you read and say your point with some respect or read and leave.

second : we are not talking about forcing like putting a gun to your head but forcing by removing some pieces of the game that should be originally in it and so on , but of course if you read the long thread you would know that.

third : again this forum called playstation discussions, so if you have any opinion say it but with respect to the people here and to their effort .

@yosam11:

I think you misunderstood my idea. I like single player DLC, not MP so much. I bought the season pass for Assassins Creed 4 because it had lots of single player including a new campaign. Which is my idea of good DLC.
