I'll be honest, i've never played the old ones. Maybe to appreciate 4 you have to of had played 1-3. Anyway, IMO the game was horrible. I needed something new to play so i bought it, figured i'd try it out. The only good part were the movie graphics, the gameplay was so repetitive. I played through a couple levels and traded it in already, i lost like 30 bucks on the deal. Not even the scantily clad women could keep me playing. Am i the only one??

I bought lego star wars the complete saga...and am having more fun playing that instead....

Personally, I loved the game. Great graphics, a good storyline, and a REALLY good gameplay. At least, for me, the game wasnt repetetive at all. It has a great cast of characters, great combos to be performed, and everytimea cut-scene appears, I`m happy, because i know I`m about to get great visuals(especially when someone like Trish appears :P ).

And, I just cant see how the game is repetitive. The bosses are so great, i could fight them a thousand times if I had to.There are so many demons that you have to adjust to them all the time!!Another thing I cant understand is how some people complain that when they switch to Dante its really boring to play all the same stages again. Come on, its only like two levels. And even so, the stages arent completely equal, so you wont be bored.

And, to answer your question, you dont have to play dmc1-3 to enjoy dmc4.

So, has I said, this is a great game that deserves at least, to be played at the end.

I liked this game, i have not played the old ones tho. It felt kind of repetitive last half of game. Best fight game is Ninja Gaiden Sigma.

I don't know how you didn't like it if you liked the last games, I thought it was a pretty good game, but everyone has their own opinion and well obviously it can't please everyone

I gotta disagree with this topic. I thought DMC4 was great. I didn't think it was too short at all. Heavenly sword is a lot shorter than DMC4, plus there is a good replay value to the game. I didn't play 1-3 but I thought 4 was pretty good.

Couldn't disagree more.

DMC4 is the best action/adventure/brawler yet and i don't see this changing anytime soon. Granted there's the already infamous backtracking, but that aside, everything from gameplay and graphics to story and voice acting is 10/10.

Seems like you're in the minority here. DMC 4 introduced me to the series, and while I can't play the game for more than say 1 hour at a time, I find it to be an excellent pick up and play game. On the surface it feels like a button masher but there is soo much more depth to it once you start getting into combo's and chaining moves together. I was on the fence about this game but am really glad I purchased it.

It's definitely far away from a bad game. Maybe you're right and playing the previous installations would have had different perspective on your judgement.

Maybe it's just not your type of the game. Personally, I'm a Devil May Cry fan since the first one game was released and I find that DMC4 is an fantastic game. 8)

DMC4....no complaints here. Glad I bought it, one hell of a game ( I just need to get better at pulling off combos and avoiding taking damage so I can beat Bloody Palace and, hopefully, do decent in Hell or Hell mode).

compared to dmc3 it was a bit of a letdown, the story wasnt as good and there werent very many bosses. you have to replay every boss as dante which is a bit boring. the lack of weapons also was a big letdown, dmc3 had so many different weapons to use but dmc4 had like 2 guns.

other than that the game is still great and worth the money

I personally found the story and narrative better in 4 than in 3, though considering that both are high quality, it is a matter of preference. I guess i find the "old" Dante more interesting and the relationship between him and Nero surprisingly complex and intriquing.

I personally liked the third more but IMO DMC4 is really a great game. Though i must admit to get the max out of it you have to explore its ropes, i mean you have to learn how to perform all the combos, by experimenting or just going to the menus, and read about how to perform the moves. If you play it like a button mashing game it´ll be incredibly dull, thats not the soul of a DMC game. It would be like playing resistance with the carbine only. I have to say im now playing dante must die mode, and im havin a whole ot of fun.

Well i have to agree with the poster. i bought the original dmc and dmc2 and i never played 3 because i knew what to expect. Graphically most games that capcom does are beautiful and this wasn't and exception. I think the story just didn't pull me in. I made it to the point where i got to be dante, on normal and really began to lose interest. So i replayed the game on easy just to get through it because it became chore. Luckily for me a friend from work loaned me that copy. I now know why the guy who's responsible for the ninja gaiden series doesn't like dmc. Before playing this game i always thought that dmc and gaiden were a lot alike but now its like comparing the next gen systems. They are both just on different levels.

It's an awesome game, but my opinion is biased since I am a fan of the series, but rarely do I see someone who never played the previous ones to not like it. I had to yank the controller out of my best friend's hand the first time he ever played it lol

But yeah I will admit I spent more time on Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga actually

Agree.

So much for your rules for True Gamers huh MusashiSensi ... unless you left the club

but yeh, I wasn't a fan of DMC4 either nightshade, no doubt the graphics were impressive, but I had had enough after a few runs through the demo

I love DMC4, and it is probably the best fighter/slasher available. I'll take it over Ninja Gaiden or God of War anyday.
