Only if you need to know Desmond and co. story (the present). The ancestor story is pretty much stand alone.

I assumed from you post that story is your main concern here so at least get AC2 and its sequels. Both Ezio's (ancestor in AC2) and Desmond's part are interesting there. A lot of things happened and questions answered there for Desmond's part.

As for AC1, just watch Youtube videos for AC1. AC1's story was short and not so interesting cause the game introduced a lot of question as base of whole Desmond's story and at the end most of them were unanswered, not to mention the tedious gameplay.

I only played through around two thirds of AC1, as I found it became pretty tedious after a while. AC2 and Brotherhood are miles better in terms of mission variety and in general much more fun gameplay wise.
And like a previous poster said a lot of the story is left unexplained in the first game anyway so you can easliy watch a story recap on youtube and not feel like you've missed out on anything too important.

I'd say so; it gives it more context.

Same. The gameplay is fun but its the story that really has me wanting to know what happens next.

At the very VERY least, I would read through the very brief plot summaries on wikipedia.

That would be a good idea to understand the story behind AC and the main character Desmond.

I'm probably the only one in this forum who actually really enjoyed AC1. I highly recommend you to play both games. AC1 really introduces you to the whole story and it's a great start for your long journey into AC games. AC2 is also a great game.

Don't worry I'm with you. In fact, I'd go so far as to say I'm hooked on the story because of how well AC1 played out plot-wise.

You dont have to but you should.

AC is a heavy story based game. You even should play Brotherhood and Revelations for the full experience since, even though they considered spin offs by some people, they still continue the AC2 story

No, you're not. I enjoyed AC1 alot. At the time it was pretty mindblowing and like nothing I've seen before it. Its probably the AC I enjoyed the most even though its technically the worst in the series. The new ones, even though they're pretty good, they just dont had the wow factor AC1 had at the time it released

You don't have to, it might help, but if you really want to skip it, go ahead. How can you play the 3rd Assassin's Creed? It isn't out yet. Unless you mean 'Brotherhood.'

Assassin's Creed 1 was really repetitive and flawed, but if you care about the story it is possible to breeze through it with quick travel and only focusing on main missions with the barest amount of side mission work.

Assassin's Creed II is a must play, it expands on everything in every way. Better combat, better story, more variety, more locations, more weapons, more customization, more level types, etc. It doesn't offer the open up assassinations of the first game, but its better in every single way.

I'd say Brotherhood is a maybe, Revelations you could probably skip. Brotherhood is fun, but it feels like an expansion that adds more story and multiplayer, but if you loved ACII its worth playing.

Not really, but it will only cost you $29.99 at best buy for the Assassins creed 1&2 2 pack. So it is inexpensive to do so.

I enjoyed AC1, for the first few hours... then it became such a bore playing the same missions over and over again that the story was the only thing holding my interest anymore.

I, and I believe much like MANY other people that have played the game (I've seen many posts saying so without me even asking) , only managed to get through about 70-90% of the game before I said "No more!" and sat the game down. Picked it back up a few months later when the annoyance sort of faded to finally get to see the awesome cliffhanger ending.:? All those questions just left me wanting more Assassin's Creed..

I was so happy at the E3 announcement of AC2 that they were addressing the mission variety in the game, and they improved on it so much I was hooked throughout the entire game AND even bought the DLC to see more of the story, even though the DLC story isn't what I care about since it follows Ezio rather than Desmond. But ya, AC2 is MUCH better than AC1 gameplay wise.

Just like how I didn't care much for Ezio's story as much as Desmond's, I decided to skip out on Brotherhood and Revelations, cause they seemed to me like just more DLC and addition of multiplayer, not my interest. I may youtube them close to the release of 3 just to make sure I'm not missing any small details tho, cause trust me, they matter.

I haven't yet played Revelations but plan to before 3 comes out but I have played Brotherhood and if you are interested in Desmond's story, then I definitely recommend youtubing Brotherhood. Not sure what will carry over but some (IMO) major events took place.

I personally loved II (first game I played in the series), skipped Brotherhood and now have Revelations (don't care for it much). I couldn't care less about Desmond's storyline, really only interested in the ancestors (which is a problem for me as each game seems to have more Desmond in it).

Okay thanks man, I really wasn't sure because any time I saw trailers or anything it seemed focused on Ezio and multiplayer. I'll be sure to check them out tho
