I thought PS3 was rare to break? Did you purchase one & how much it cost you?

Warranties on ANY electrical item are a waste of money (at least in the UK....).

If your item breaks, even just outside it's standard 12 month manufacturer warranty, you can still force the manufacturer or in some cases even the shop you bought it from, to provide you with a replacement/repair at no cost. UK law dictates that any item you buy should work for a "reasonable amount of time" after buying and anyone sensible person can argue that a PS3 costing £300+ should indeed be expected to work for FAR more than just a bog standard 12 month warranty.

I had a laptop from PC world that stopped working after it was 14 months old, and although the shop I took it back to were initially very unhelpful as it was past it's 12 month warranty, I fought my corner and took them to the small claims court under the Sale of Goods Act. The shop were forced to accept my item back and either repair or replace it at no charge... they ended up replacing it and even gave me a bunch of vouchers that I spent on some anti virus software and stuff.

Not only that, but a lot of the time your standard household insurance will also cover the replacement of an electrical item in your house - you may have to pay an excess to make the claim, but the option is there.

Remember though - what I'm talking about is UK law. I imagine it's similar around the world, but I could be wrong....

Bottom line is - warranties are usually a big waste of money when you generally have all the necessary laws already covering you, as long as you're prepared to fight and not accept some half-a$$ed shop manager's answer.

What you have to remember is that Sony offer a waranty and what that means is that your betting Sony that your PS3 will break within the enlarged period and Sony is betting it won't...   Sony will make money on the deal so I'd say it was a waste of time..

So unless your PS3 takes a lot of abuse (heat, dust, impact etc.) I don't think it would be cost effective..

i wasn't originally going to get one, but then i decided to get the 3 year cuz it was only $20 more then the 2 year, i got it at futureshop and i think it cost $80, thinking about it now i prob wouldn't get it, but if it breaks 3 times ill get a brand new one, which is way better then ebgames warranty where the 1st time it breaks they give you a refurbished one. Also by the time my 3 year warranty is gone a PS3 will prob sell for under $200, So unless it breaks 3 times within the first 2 years i dont think it was worth it. but if it does die 3 times hopefully the slim PS3 will be out and hopefully it will have full PS and PS2 BC again, but i take care of my stuff so if it breaks its prob cuz of a defect. My original PS2 that i got in 2002 still works, i never had a disk read error, and the only time it froze was when i used the car flying cheat in GTA and got into a helicopter.

damn u gamespot, ive hit that stupid reset button thats in the same spot where the post button was like 3 times now, making me retype everything

My ps3 failed to read discs. A had my ps3 for 1 yr 3 months. I am so glad I bought an extended 2 year warranty. Considering I paid nearly a grand for the unit it was worth the extra $70 or so (Aussie). Should get it back monday.

Get a warranty. My PS3 literally just broke, but luckily Im still in warranty. It sucks though. I paid 400 dollars so I could get a system that didn't bust within a year. Ive gone through this **** with the Xbox 360 twice, and now PS3 blu ray dies. WTF? Does anyone know how long it takes to get your system back?

As I said in another thread- when you call them they send you a bar code to your email. You print it and take it along with your ps3 to a post office. They scan the bar code and box your system up there for you at no charge
