well duh... just completley shutting of the power to a still running console is like unplugging the memory card when you're saving on a PS2.

If you turn off your PS3 without putting it into stand by mode first, you could corrupt the data on the hard drive. It's the same thing with the PS2 as well, but the PS2 doesn't have a (built in) hard drive. If you do that to your PS2 you will most likely burnout the switch.

At first when I read the thread topic I was a little confused until I read further, yes it's definitely a bad idea to shut it off from the back if it's not on standby mode.

So kicking it until it's off is bad?

Just kidding, but I do this anyway. Partially because I'm too lazy to reach around the back to turn it off

Shutting down via the controller is fine. The 3 beeps you hear before you shut down means your PS3 was in the middle of an operation so it cancelled the operation and restarted so you can shut down without any problems.

If you want to turn off your ps3, make sure the light in front of the system is the color RED, meaning the system is on stand by and then turn off the switch in the back.

I feel like this is becoming a mass problem with people just flipping the switch in the back everytime there is a freezing or lock up issue. DON'T DO IT!! My source: PS3 manual and Sony customer Service.

My PS3 just had it's hard drive wiped when exactly that happened! I was wondering for days what it could have been! Thanks man, you've saved me having that happen again.

WOW you are the only wise man around here then. Good for you. The guy is just sharing an info. And it seems that a lot of people (including myself, never shut it down from the back but still) knew about it.

What happened to the first?

I brought it over my friends house and he plugged it in using a surge protector that looked like it should have been in museum. The thing was practically prehistoric. When he went to turn it on, a big spark came from the outlet and it shorted his TV. Everything worked on the PS3 fine after that except the picture. It just wouldn't show anymore. The sound was there and everything else, just no picture. So, naturally, I thought it was just the AV cable. What also helped that theory was the fact that a spark also came from the AV outlets when the TV shorted. So I went and bought a replacement AV cable. To my extreme dismay, it didn't work. So I sent the system into Sony for another one. And thats how my first PS3 broke.

Uhm, wouldn't it help if you reset the display settings on your PS3, that would be the main cause of no audio or video. When it's in stand-by, hold your finger on the power sensor untill it beeps twice, this will reset the settings.

I turn off my PS3 by pressing the Power button on the front and when the system is totally turned off, I flip the switch in the back.

Did you know that a PS3 in standby uses about the same amount of electricity as when its turned on.
