Hey guys, I was just wondering what Folding@Home was all about, I get that it's supposed to help with research on diseases, but how? Do guys do it?

I do, sometimes, mainly just if I walk out of the room for a few minutes and leave my ps3 on. I think I've got somewhere around 40 or so work units.

I do most of the time. The way it helps is that it simulates the folding of proteins, and it is then sent to the University of Stanford for them to collect the results and do what they do.

I downloaded the Folding@Home but never had the patience to sit through the process. Should I feel guilty for this? Or is it nothing that big.

It's such a pointless thing to do, and I think it's dumb to leave your PS3 on all day and night, thats precious gaming time you could be having with it instead! What will you do if your PS3 dies because it was left on too much "Folding"? I just laugh at the people on my friends list who "Fold at Home"

If you don't mind me asking what is pointless about helping a University project that may one day cure a heap of diseases? There is nothing pointless about it at all, if you choose not to run it more power to you but having a go at people that do is pretty lame. As for your comment about leaving your PS3 on 24/7 ... um ... LMFAO, there are super computing clusters that run on PS3 farms. If the PS3 was going to break I'm pretty sure these organizations (including the military) wouldn't be leaving their machines on 24/7. I'll finish with a  for you.

I leave mine folding when I am not using it. I think that it actually is better on the system to leave it on 24/7 instead of turning it on and off all the time. Because it puts less thermal stress on the system. And while doing so why not donate the idle on time to a great cause.

I used to, then I realized that leaving my PS3 on 24/7 eats ~185 watts of power, doing more harm to the environment than I would be doing good for research. I generally turn off electronic devices, lights, heaters and the water when I am not using them.

That may be somewhat true, but it's like leaving the water running all day, because by turning it on and off all the time you would be wearing down the faucet handles/knobs.

I fold a decent amount, usually every other night or so. I have 45 work units so far, and fold a bunch on my computer as well. Folding on a PC is a little more reasonable, because you can still actually use the PC while it runs in the background, while the PS3 can't do anything else while folding. I wish you could still fold in the background while doing other things :)

I gave it a try but stopped because it made my PS3 very loud(fan speed). Also the electricity bill for leaving a PS3 running at full speed for night and day would be high.

As long as there is plenty of room around the system to allow air to flow the power consumption cost about the same or less than what LIVE cost per year. But the money is going to something really worth while.
