its safer to stand it up, better air distribution. just feel where it gets the hottest.
While it may get better air distribution, it is more likely that dust will get into the system and can possibly ruin your games, which happened to me before I put it laying down...
Standing due to lack of space. But I really don't like the auto-loading drives on the new consoles though. My kids have a habit of sticking discs in both my PS3 and Wii upside down when I'm not around, and in the Wii, this can result in bad circular scratches on the disc. They know which way is up, but the sideways-console confuses them. When the console is laying down, they can tell which way to put the disc in more easily. I would lay them both down if I could, but they use the Wii more and it's smaller, so my Wii lies down.

if you contact sony and ask them about care and maitnence, you would be vaccuming out that dust every couple of months, it also cant hurt blueray disks because they dont get scratches. and the ps3 i had horizontle lasted half the time that the one i stand vertically and currently use did. (broke in 6 months.)
i always have mine standing up, it just the way it nicely sits next to the wii and 360 as if there a happy family, its just a shame my gal wont let me put them next to my pc, ehbooooooo!
Lying down. Because console are meant to horizontal. Although, my Wii is vertical... it came with a pretty solid base. Plus, I don't have room to have both consoles horizontal, but I also don't have room to stand the PS3 up. Quite the situation. It's because the media center that I built was built to hold my PS2 and Gamecube, and the PS3 is HUGE.
