Just wondering if its OK to leave the system in standby (i.e. with the red light) or if it is better to switch it off from the back when you are not using it.
Thanks for any info.

I keep mine in standbuy, and rarely switch it off, for one reason. i never put my playstation 2 into standbuy, sent it in to sony, and told me it was shutoff from the back too much. although they did give me a new slim one. but regarding the other posters, mine makes no noise when its in standby. hwo do you know its still running?
I leave mine on standby, it's better for the system. Switching it off in the back is like unplugging it then plugging it back in. The electricity used when it's on standby is similar to a low powered clock that uses batteries. So don't fret if you think your electric bill will rise. Guess it depends if it's hooked up to a surge protector or connected directly to a wall outlet. If it's connected to the wall outlet, then I recommend switching the unit completely off from the back. If it's connected to a surge protector, then it's better to have it on standby. To simplify things, standby may be better for the system cuz there is a slow 'river' of juice always flowing keeping the circuit boards warm. So turning on the system will not have a build up of jolt going into your PS3 with cold circuit boards. (It's like warming up your car engine before you drive)It also keeps the circuit boards not becoming too cool when the initial surge from start up flows into the unit. But if you have it connected to the wall directly, all it takes is power outage to fry your system. (the switch in back is the main circuit breaker)In my opinion, a person must be crazy to not have their PS3 connected to a surge protector. Leaving your system on standby keeps some current flow in the boards copper. I can go on and on, but a simple way to put it is like a car engine. It's best to warm it up before driving it, especially if it's really cold outside.zype2
Paragraphs are your friend. :)

LMAO!!!!
But yeah, I keep mine on standby. The lazy bone in me is just glad you can turn the system off with the controller now. Funny thing is, with my PS2 I didn't know what a standby was so for like 4 years I just flipped the switch in the back. Silly me.
OK - thanks for the opinions.
My take is that the system was made to be kept in standby when not in use and to turn it off from the switch on the back only when unplugging the system (to move it or wathevever) - I think this is the case for a few reasons:
-I think if you read the manual it describes the switch on the back as being for when you want to unplug the system.
-The way that the made the controller work for turning the system off suggests stand-by is normal (otherwise the whole idea of the controller working to turn it off is pointless)
-The red light that comes on when it is in standby is just like the red light that comes on other devices when they are off like DVD players - it essentially means that the system is off. The switch on the back is the equivalent of unplugging it. You wouldn't go and pull the plug out on DVD players whenever you done watching a movie because you don't want to leave the red light on/leave it on standby.
-I just recalled that with my PS2, I always left it on standby for 4 years and never had any problems.
I strongly suggest that everyone who switches the system off from the back stop wasting their time and just use the controller to put it in standby the way it was meant to be done. At most, if you are not going to be using your system for a month or so or something to then shut if off from the back.
Leave it in standby. The more you flick the switch on and off at the back, eventually that will wear+cause problems.I always leave mine on standby and no probs.Just wondering if its OK to leave the system in standby (i.e. with the red light) or if it is better to switch it off from the back when you are not using it.
Thanks for any info.

Plus if you've got a PSP and want to access your PS3 while out and about, well you're gonna have no luck if you've gone out and left PS3 switched off at rear.
