I can't figure out which to do. I know you would be able to utilize the functionality of the remote start and such but part of me says its a no no. What do yall think?

I turn it off using the switch if I'm going to be out for long, because I don't want anyone turning it on by accident and then not knowing how to turn it off.

99% of the time i leave it in stand-by, I only take the time to switch the power off during a particularly bad snow storm or if I go on vacation for an extended period of time. I did the same thing with my Bought-on-Launch PS2, and it still runs perfectly fine. Turning it off will save you on your electricity bill, but somewhere in the range of $1 to 25 cents a month. Then again if you take the time to unplug your PS3 and TV you could probably save another dime a month

If you still have an old bulky TV in your house just trace your hand on the glass and you will feel how much static electricity it continues to build on standby.

If you plan on not using a device for long periods (1 week+) you should ALWAYS turn it off using the I/O button.

As devices are left on standby they still continue to build up (very small amounts of) electricity wich is discharged on use.
Let it gather enough electricity and you run the risk of affecting the consoles lifetime

What the I/O switch does is disconnecting the power supply, leaving it on standby means that is still being fed.
Standby is totally harmless if ya dont use the device for just a few days.

The only time I used the main power switch is when I disconnected the console to move to another spot. The rest of the time I never turn the console off at all. When I am not using the system I leave it folding.

The more you turn it on and off the more damaging it is.

Same with my PC its on 24/7 and i restart it one every couple of weeks....or whenever it needs it

Your system will probably last longer if you don't constantly turn the main switch on and off.

I think there's a research that shows the PS3 consumes very lil energy on standby.. but still.. if I know I can't play it for awhile.. I turn the switch off.. thas just me..

Um since when does the PS3 download when it is in stand by mode? For the TC - I only turn it off at the back if I'm going away or there are thunderstorms in the area.

Yeah, that was the biggest disappointment for me going from the 360 to the PS3, much slower DL speeds and you if you turn off your monitor the PS3 cancels your downloads...

I turns downloads off if you turn monitor off? Doesn't happen with my TV. Never heard that before.

So far even if you shut the PS3 down when you turn it back on it will resume the download from the point it was when it was shut down.

Macri

it's called paranoia (read: They are afraid of the PS3 breaking..)

OR! they don't have the best job in the world, and they might not be able to pay the "insane" bills they are getting because of all the stuff they have put on Stand By mode.. no wait, that can't be. because Stand By mode isn't THAT power consuming... hmm, then its just Paranoia

hahaha.. Looks like you have a future gamer on your hands there! Congrats :P

Anyways, I'm not exactly paranoid because when im home i leave it on standby and when i leave my house for a few days, that's when i turn off the PS3 completely. I also do that with everything that has stand by (Wii, Computer, Xbox 360. Etc.)
