i was playing LBP and when i was finished, i pressed home button and chose turn off system. When my friend saw this he said i should have chosen quit game first then turn off system while i'm in the XMB. He said i shouldn't turn off system immediately when im in a game because something wrong might happen with the CD, sort off turning the system off prematurely and screwing up the lens or cd or something i dunno. I just wanna ask if there's some truth to this? I think its a bunch of non sense but i dont know the system's hardware so i really can't say. Also, when i just turn on the system, and i press the eject button BEFORE the xmb shows up, will something bad happen to my ps3? like i should wait for it to be on the xmb to eject the disc? I got scolded again for doing this. It really sounds stupid,, it is stupid i think, but i just want to know if there some truth to this.

Sometimes I quit the game through XMB and then turn the system off. Other times I just turn my system off while in game. Sony wouldn't give you the option of turning your system off while still in game if it would destroy it,

Nothing bad is going to happen to your system if you turn it off while in game. The only time you will have a problem is if you quit/turn the game or system off while it is saving or loading something.

As for the ejecting....hell I turn my system on sometimes by pressing the eject button...no problems as of yet. *knock on wood*

I doubt anything bad would happen to the disc if you turn it off in-game - I do it all the time. I do generally quit out of PS2 games, however, as I've heard that shutting it off directly can lead to the virtual memory cards corrupting. Whether there's any truth to that, I have no idea, but I haven't had anything go weird yet.

I turn offmy ps3 the same way....as long as your hard drive isnt being accessd (game save, game load) I think its fine. Just about every game has that warning before loading -something like -do not turn off system while hard drive light is flashing...

I also eject the dvd the same way..

Im sure you will get different thoughts on this...

Your friend's thinking wrong.Turning the PS3 off in a game is totally ok I think, BUT if you cut off the power with switch behind the PS3 something wrong might happen.

That's what I do too. I think either way is alright, but it's best to quit the game first IMO. A long time ago I've had times where I turned off the system while still in a game and it froze. Who knows what caused it though. I just look at it this way.... the PS3 is like a PC, and you wouldn't just turn your PC off while you're still running Half-Life 2, would you? ;)

PCs don't have an option to directly turn them off in-game unless you just mash the power button. The PS3 (and 360 and Wii) all have the option in their menu to turn the system off immediately in-game. No one would have included that if it wasn't safe. I mean, it's a soft shutoff anyway. If you're flicking the power switch in the back to turn it off, then you've got a problem.

EXACTLY . Read the bolds . That says it all . If turning off the console while a game is running is bad , WHY WOULD SONY INCLUDE THAT OPTION ?

However , if you turn off the PS3 by flicking the back switch while a game is running on , that MAY not be good for the system .

As a manner of practice I always shut the game of first and then the system via XMB. I am sure the PS3 system software architecture has built in cleanup routines to handle appropriate resource (memory, for example) cleanup if you decide to Turn Off System first before shutting the game down...same with the BluRay Disc reader. Killing the system via the power switch in the back, however, is another story...same deal with a power outage. That you should definitely not do...but even said, there is probably a manner of software startup detection for any type of orphaned resources that need to be disposed and/or reclaimed the next time you start it up.

i doubt it really matters for a start the option wouldnt be there if you could damage your console turning off while playing. iv also noticed that if you turn the console off while a game is still running it takes slightly longer to shutdown, i guess that is because it goes through the process of ending and shutting down whatever game/film is running before powering down.

I shut down my PS3 in the middle of playing a game after I've saved or just want to turn it off probably 98% of the time and haven't had one problem with my PS3's disc drive yet. Nor has my disc gotten destroyed.

I always press the PS button, click quit game, eject the disc at the main Playstation menu, then go along to turn off (if your turning off your console) and when it is in standby mode (red light) I switch it off from the back. :)

The warning is for flipping the power switch on the back of the console, not for turning it off through the menu or front touch button. When you use the option to turn the console off in game or use the front power button, the console powers down into a standby mode. Flipping the switch in the back is like yanking the power cord out of your PC while it's running.

yesss because sony is going to provide you with an option to turn your system off that would hurt it....

Come on now

this isn't me flaming the way you handle your ps3 either, its just that you are claiming something as FACT, when ... it isn't one. Cheers

Exiting the game first just seems like the safer option, though it probably makes no difference.

I go two ways about depending on what the situation calls for. If I'm in a hurry, I'll just hold down the PS button, select turn system off and leave it at that. If I'm not in a hurry I just go to quit game and turn the system off manually.

I don't really think there is any truth to what your friend said, I've done what you've done plenty of times and all of my discs still work perfectly fine and my system is working ok.

It's fine. It's not a hard turn off anyway. If you notice when you choose that option it takes about 30 seconds to turn off anyway. That's the PS3 automatically exiting out of the game and shutting itself down. You're just wasting your own time by doing it yourself.

I don't think anything bad happens when you turn off the console while you're in a game but then I have no proof if it does or doesn't. Truth of the matter is I treat the PS3 like I treat my PC. When playing a game on the PC, I quit the game, take the disc out (unless the game is from Steam), then I turn off my PC.

I do the same with the PS3 by quiting the game via XMB, take the disc out & then shutting down the system or I log into Folding@Home & let the system turn off automatically after it's finished folding a workunit.

If you're not satisfied with the answers provided on the forum, check out http://www.us.playstation.com/support/ps3. This is about as official as it's gonna get.

PC's DO have the option to turn off the system before you exit a game or application. You can minimize the game, allowing you to access the Start menu and shut off the computer. That doesn't mean it's the best option. However, note that I said either way is alright in my previous post. I didn't say one was wrong, or one was right. I just think one is easier on the system than the other, and there's no doubt about that.

Sorry for replying to old thread, but I had the same question and came across this thread.

I think the equivalent to directly switching off the PS3 before quitting the game for a PC is like running Half-Life 2 then alt-tabbing then choosing Start-> Shut Down. No one does that, they always quit the game first. Arguing "why would sony allow that on the ps3" is like saying "why would windows allow alt-tab in the game for you to go to Start Menu and select shut down if it wasn't meant for it?"

If you quit your apps and games before you shut down on your computer then you would do it on your ps3. Neither really has any proven "bad" consequences, only occasional complications like Freezing, which then is enough evidence for me to quit the game first. As I said, you wouldn't open Internet Explorer, Microsoft Word, and Half-Life2 then go to START menu -> Shut Down before quitting those applications on a PC would you?

I do both but it makes no difference either way. If you turn off while in game, the disk light flashes which indicates that it stops the disk from spinning before shutting down, so it does no damage. If it did cause damage, the option wouldn't be there would it?
