I'm thinking about trading my 60gb for a 40gb unit but the one thing i need to know first is if the 40 will ever get BC. Have any of you guys ever heard anything about it? (Yes I know that the 60gb has the best BC right now, but there are some reasons why i kinda need to get rid of it) (Ok, my 60gb ps3 won't read discs and since i live in Venezuela, i can't get it fixed here, Sony Venezuela won't repair it because they say they are not currently distributing the PS3 in Latin America except for Mexico, so it's kinda lying dead on my bedroom for months and i'm thinking about selling it for half the price and get a new one)

BC as in being able to play the discs? Not likely. They may make it possible to play downloaded PS2 games from the PlayStation Store like they do with PSOne games now- they have been discussing that but nothing firm yet.

I dont understand why the 40gb models dont have BC. Surely its just emulation software? Or is there actual hardware required?

If the 80gb can emulate PS2 games i don't see why the 40gb wouldn't do it... damn, if there was a BC SKU right now on the market I wouldn't even think about it :(

Can you find an 80 gig? If you're that concerned about BC then that would be your best bet.

I don't know... are they still avaliable at the USA as of now? maybe my mom will go to Miami on vacation like on 3 or 4 months... and there is the price thing... Damn, if Sony had express service i could ask my mom to have it fixed while she's over there... But she's only staying in for like 2-4 weeks and i heard that service COULD take longer than that.

I think they are still available but you'll have to look around. I don't know how familiar/comfortable you are with shopping online but you can certainly find them on amazon or ebay.

Excelent! thanks man, i think i'm gonna go for this since MGS4 was one of the reasons I bought a PS3 :D

The only downside is that in the BC battle 60Gb vs 80Gb, the 60 wins, but not by much is it? I love My PS/PS2 lybrary and this is great news to me :D

PS: you guys wouldn't believe how expensive are the PS3 on my country (they go for around 1020$ to 1860$ if you buy them on a Venezuelan retailer)

I have a 60gig and my buddy has an 80 and he has not experienced any problems with BC. Wow, it is really expensive for a PS3 in your country! I would have to sell a kidney or something to buy one there :P

I know it's stupid! And you guys still complain about the PS3 being so expensive :D

They are so expensive that i can sell mine wich is broken for like 500$ and just buy a new one later this year without taking a single dime out of my pocket :P

EDIT: in case you didn't believe me:

http://articulo.mercadolibre.com.ve/MLV-8326384-sony-playstation-3-40gb-spider-man-_JM

2.500 Bolivares!

1 US Dollar = 2.15 Bolivares so...

2500 Bolivares = 1162$

How about that? :D Damn i hate Chavez!!!!!!!!!

Dude I hope so. I really do. I'm saving up my money from work to buy a PS3 and I can't find any of the 80GB ones in stores, I can only find the 40GB.

Yeah, the MGS4 bundle will deffinitly be your best bet for BC. The thing is, the 60 and 80 gb modles have a chipset in tehm that allows the system to read PS and PS2 discs, they omited the chipset from the 40 gig modles (not sure why) so without cracking it open and installing the chipset yourself, it just 'aint gona work.

The 80 GB also had chips inside specifically for running the emulation- those were taken out of the 40 GB. To do it now would require an all-software solution, which Sony is possibly working on to enable PS2 game downloads like they have for PSOne games now.

Alucardio, considering Venezuela is part of the NTSC territory getting the 80 GB would be an option for you- those of you in PAL territories are SOL, however.

I think it is less then likely and at best a 50/50 shot down the road. I know that Sony claims that taking out the hardware for PS2 compatibility allowed them to reduce costs. However as time goes by the cost of hardware that is 8, 9, 10 years old by 2010 is insignificant. I think this had more to do with their profits from legacy PS2 hardware as they keep the system on shelves like they did with the PS1. If every PS3 doesn't have PS2 compatibilty it will make the purchase of an old but smaller and sleeker PS2 more enticing. If you want the PS2 in your PS3 instead you pay an extra $100 for the better model. Either way Sony wins and they are able to keep their retail model without canabalizing any one part of it.

When one realizes that the PS2 will not play PS3 games, they buy a PS3.

The rest of my post will be complete sarcasm. 'What is wrong with you sony! I bought a PS2 to play games when that came out, and now I buy a PS3 to play PS3 games, but you won't let me play my PS2 games I bought way back when for the PS2 hardware on your new machine that I bought to play PS3 games on! Sony!? Why would I buy a PS3 if I can't play PS2 games on it? Just like how I bought a GC because it plays N64, Super NES and NES games!! What a terrible thing to do! You will lose sooo much business because of this! What is wrong with you? Trying to sell a new console that you think was created to play 'new' stuff. How silly of you sony, to think that 'next-gen' wasn't last gen.'

And.. thats all. I'm not pointing any fingers at anyone. I just felt like posting that, so please do not take offense if your'e upset about the no BC on 40gb. My intention wasn't cruelty, it was a gesture of sarcasm to explain my feelings in manner that seems to represent itself quite frequently. Just figured it would be more easily understandable. The affirmentioned post, came from my heart. Please don't confuse cruel sarcasm with 'love sarcasm' (which is what I used). It was posted for the good, not to hurt.

EDIT: I don't see sony making any moves for BC on 40gb. Also wanted to add that this particular thread is much more mature than the usual 'no BC in 40gb' threads of the past. I applaud the maturity, and that fact that your asking a question as to the likelyhood of it occurring in the 40gb model. I edited my post a few times as I was coming off as a jerk, which is not my intention.

The rest of my post will be complete sarcasm, regarding what seems to be a large majority of point of view of those backlashing at the 'no BC in 40gb' (the following have been comments seen on this forum in other threads, apart from the GC comment ;-)): 'What is wrong with you sony! At work, if you show your manage or boss that you can complete a certain task with excellent results... they will expect you to continue to do that no matter what, and with complete loyalty. It seems the same has happened with Sony and BC. They threw it in as a nice gesture to their customers, and now are expected to continue to do so. So what once was a nice gesture, is now a requirement.

A very well thought out post there. As far as the 40 gig having BC support for PS2 games the thing is there were also video hardware that was removed in this SKU that supports the emulation software.
