My old PS2 still works but it is faulty at times where I have to tap it. I don't want to buy a new one or set up another gaming system because the clutter. Do you think Sony could ever make a download where they can make PS3 slim backward capatible or is it a hardware issue and is impossible? I would pay for the download if it was reasonable.

Sure they want to clear out any of the PS2 for $99.99 but I don't think it is a good idea to do this later on. PS2 isn't really alive and making new games. I just want to play my old games. Put the PS2 firmware at playstation store. Give it for free or sell it for 10-20 bucks. I would be fine with that. If they wait, lot of people will just lose interest in it.

I think part of the reason they took away BC from the PS3 slim is because they didn't want people shy from PS3 games and keep on buying used PS2 games from gamestop. Less money for game developers. I think the PS3 is fully developed with a great ps3 games that it is good time to come out with a PS2 BC firmware.

I think Sony would make more money selling a PS2 BC firmware for $10 at Playstation Store than hope for sales of PS2. It is hard for me to believe that PS2 is still selling in 2010 in retail stores. "CMON SONY! Get with the times and create this firmware."

I downloaded something called "PS2 Data" from PSN. I said something about letting your PS3 play PS2 games, but also that it don't work on the 40GB. What was that? I have a Slim and of course it did't work when I put in a PS2 disc

I doubt it. The slim is probably incapable of reading ps2 and ps1 disks. Probably one of the main reasons they cut it in the first place is because it added to the big price of the ps3. So you would probably end up having to get some sort of hardware and it would probably be a bit pricey. But in all honesty, I guess I cant be sure. Maybe they can. If they can, hopefully they will soon.

That lets you play games online on your ps3 if you have ps2 playback.

*lets you play ps2 games that is because they need slight HDD memory.

i understand some of you guys don't wanna buy a new ps2 but come on, their like 40 bucks now and basically cost as much as a new ps3 game so this whole BC debate is pretty redundant I still have my ps2 slim model and still play it and i know most people that complain about BC also have ps2 but for some strange reason they want it on the ps3 when if they really wanted to play some ps2 games its right there

I think selling the ps2 games on PSN is more reasonable, why would they give ps2 disk play back? They don't make money from PS2 games anymore. This being said, I don't think the internet is ready for ps2 games via download. (People still have bandwidth caps)

I personally dont think so after reading an article that made some good points. Cant recall the name of it, but it was basically pointing to have ps2 games loaded onto the psn store in future time. Hope not, but you really never know.

I agree if they can make a good software that runs the games in virtual environment which is probably the only way possible, then sure i'd like to see it... I wouldn't buy as i have a ps2 and never play it so why bother buying smething i'll never use.

Put it this way. PS2 was BC, Wii was BC, Xbox360 is BC (with a hard drive) and the ps3 is only BC in some models. Get on the ball Sony. No one is going to buy a new ps2 right now. If they are going to spend a $100 on a game system they will get a PSP PREOWNED which still means they wouldnt make money on that sale. I like the idea ALOT of selling BC software at $20 on the PSN Store. That would be a nice sales boost for funds AND they would make money off that, rather than let someone buy a preowned ps2 and Gamestop get the money. Yes, there are MANY ps2 games and most you can only get preowned, but this gets sony a little more change in their pocket. There are many possible flaws to this idea, but I think this would at least make the community and public happy.

I checked ebay right now and they are selling used ps2 for around 50-60 includes shipping. To me, that is too much when I have a ps2 already that i just gotta tap sometimes. Lot of us have PS2s that work but it is an eye sore to stack my television stand with more clutter. I don't like having a couple game systems underneath my television. It looks bad. I got ps3, blu-ray player, home theatre system, large tv, etc. I don't need another electronic device especially a game system.

Bingo! That's why bc on the PS3 was such a good idea. Not to mention the virtual memory cards.

Honestly, I'd pay the price of a PS2 to have upscaled full HD emulation. I really would :(

Have you SEEN how awful a PS2 looks on an HDTV? Also I like the wireless controller. Is it so much to ask to actually use the hardware I pay for? Especially when it is 100% capable of emulating PS2 games.

Yea. Upscaled HD emulation is necessary. It is pretty much impossible to play my PS2 on my 46" samsung lcd. too blurry with ps2 on big screen. It would be nice to have upscaled HD emulation.

no, old PS3 BC used PS2 chipssets to get the job done, the emulation BC still used some of the PS2 hardware in it and partial emulation, but I doubt they'll add PS2 BC anytime soon, it'll cost a little more to ad the chips to make it BC and right now Sony is trying to get costs down to match a Xbox 360 price cut as soon as possible

False. There's no hardware required to play PS2 games. It just needs an emulator PROGRAM, not a hardware. If the sony devs can make a top of the line emulator solely for the ps3, than you could just get the BC through a software update.

I'm willing to pay a monthly fee to have my ps3 play ps2 games. It would be really cool if they can add BC for the subscribers of playstation plus. That would exponentially increase the amount of subscribers for that service.

Yeah. I'm satisfied with PS+ as is, but if they added PS2 functionality it would be insane.

Didn't the PAL 60gb PS3's already use software emulation for PS2 games? Whilst the US PS3's had the emotion chip or whatever it was called.

It is not difficult at all to make a software emulation for experienced programmers like the ones working for Sony. The most logical explanation for PS3 not having BC is: sony wants to continue making money by selling 100 dollar PS2 consoles. I'm assuming the sales are somewhat good for them to continue producing the PS2.

well if they put the gaems on the psn they would still need a firmware update to all the slim to play the gaems. so wouldnt that also mean that the slim would then have ps2 disc reading capabilties also

NO WAY... ONLY A 100 DOLLARS, JUST 100? The point here is not only many people are not willing to pay the money to buy an outdated system, it's just that it's much more convenient to play games from both systems on just one system. All the other systems have BC and sony here, with the best console from the previous gen, does not have it...

why are people so adament about this? do you seriously want to play ps2 games that bad?

STFU and read the other posts.... I have a PS2, but why have both systems plugged in when I could just have one that played both games. Plus, as has already been mentioned, there are bluetooth controllers, virtual memory cards, upscaling, smoothing, etc... that would make it a much more enjoyable experience. K? Thanks.

Respawn-d
Sony tried to make an emulator for PS2 games for non B/C systems, but the only successful one was in the 80GB PS3 (4 USB), and that only worked because it was half hardware half emulaton (didnt have EE (PS2 CPU) only GS (PS2 GPU). the 60GB and 20GB had the EE and GS, and used hardware, not emulation. They didnt release the unsuccessful emulator that they made for the slim/40GB/80GB (2USB)/120GB because it only was able to play 30% of all PS2 games

Did you actually read these posts why so many PS3 users want BC? And don't say the ps2 "only" costs $100. I know the ps2 costs around like $60 bucks on ebay but you don't get it. We don't want to have multiple systems and we don't want to spend "only $100" for new system. And it is hilarious how you say "I have tons of great ps2 games THAT I NEVER HAD THE URGE TO PLAY ANYMORE?!" Obviously they weren't that "great" to you. I have tons of ps2 games that I actually have the urge to play once in a while especially when tekken5>tekken6, RE4>RE5, VF4:Evo>VF5, Need for Speed: Most Wanted>Need for Speed:Carbon, Def Jam: Fight for NY>Def Jam: Icon (what the hell was that)?!, Grand Theft Auto on PS2>Grand Theft Auto4, Burnout3:Takedown>Burnout Paradise and there are many other great ps2 games. Just because your ps2 and your great ps2 games are gathering dust that doesn't mean everybody else don't want to play ps2 games anymore. Don't automatically assume that just because the ps3 has better graphics that those games are superior to classic ps2 games.

[QUOTE="LURCH87"]

[QUOTE="EpiphoneMan2008"]there is this cool add-on for only a hundred bucks called a PS2BH14

this guy gets it all this talk about BC is ridiculous. if you want to play ps2 games so bad buy a ps2 simple. they only cost $100 some places sell them for $50. i still have my slim ps2 and it collects dust. i have never had the urge to turn on my ps2 and i have tons of great ps2 games. have you seen ps2 games on flat-screens they look awful.

why are people so adament about this? do you seriously want to play ps2 games that bad?

Thank you. I do not understand the logic behind those people who are opposed to BC for PS3. It will only make the system better. I mean look at the 360 and the wii they both have BC. Plus saying, "it only costs 100 dollars" is such an ignorant comment considering that not everyone is as spoiled/makes as much money as you.

They can and are at least contemplating it, they got a patent for "software emulation of the Emotion Engine using PS3 hardware" (or something similar) months ago.

What I don't understand is:

Why are people happy to have the bare minimum? As consumers we should WANT a company to give us as much as we can get, for fewer dollars. STOP being content to shell out another $100 to be able to play games that are in some cases 10 years old (or close to it). STOP defending a company that could easily give us SOME sort of BC, even if it's not 100% of a library.

what games up there have you not beat multiple times already? how fun can games still be after you played them too death?

yes i read the posts and LOL at the fact that every game you listed up there i own except for three of them. i do not now where you read that i said graphics make games superior either. i was simply stating the fact that ps2 games look stretched out and blurry on flat-screens. your crazy if you think sony will charge less than $50 or more for a BC program on the ps3 (they are still making money off ps2 sales), so why not buy a ps2 and stop hoping for BC if you want to play the games so badly. if people still want to play their ps2 games stop whining about BC and buy a ps2 if you dont already have one.

like i said before i do not have the urge to play my ps2 games anymore because i have already played them to death already NOTbecause i think ps3 games are superior (LOL where did you read that).

Thank you. I do not understand the logic behind those people who are opposed to BC for PS3. It will only make the system better. I mean look at the 360 and the wii they both have BC. your post is ignorant for assuming im spoiled or make a lot of money. most ps3 games cost $60 some are $40, so for the price of two games you can basically buy a ps2 to play all your ps2 games. im not against BC im just dumbfounded by the fact that people think sony is just gonna give it to them for free. even when old ps3 systems launched with BC they cost $100 more then old ps3 systems without it, so what are you people saying exactly? you would basically be buying a ps2 anyway.

K? Thanks.EpiphoneMan2008

wow nice choice of words i bet your a real cool guy good job. if only it were that simple old ps3 systems with BC only played a quarter of the ps2 library anyway. also the games that did play did not always run smoothly, upscaling does not make much of a difference, and it's not really that much of a hassle to use a wired controller. virtual memory cards are nice though i doubt you will find a transfer cable to get your old saves on your ps3. yes i read the other posts why do people keep bringing that up seriously.

Why are some of you against people wanting this BC? How dare they want a system with a feature that both of the other current gen consoles have.

I personally would love for this to happen, I could finally scrap my hardly working PS2.

thats how i feel. sure hooking up the componet cables from my ps3 to my ps2 makes it look 1000x better. but it would still look even better if it was playing through the ps3. because that would upconvert it and theres settting so that it wont look all crappy and grainy. BC is something they shouldnt have goten rid over. sony needs to change there slogan now because the ps3 no longer does everything

Hey Lurch87,

You keep asking why don't we just buy a PS2 and we all gave you a long list of reasons why we don't want to have another game system under our television. I don't need anymore clutter. And I see USED slim PS2s selling for $60 on ebay. My current fat PS2 is on its last life where I have to constantly tap it for it to work. It refuses to play some games. I won't be spending $60-100 for a 10 year old system. And if I buy a used PS2, I have to worry about how long it would last. I can be sold a broken PS2 on ebay and how does that help me. And I never said anything about spoiled/making as much money comment. Fighter91 said something like that. And you keep on going back to buying the physical PS2. WE DON'T WANT ANOTHER PHYSICAL PS2 FOR $60-100. I have a fat PS2 that is working half @ss the time and I am willing to spend $30 or less for some type firmware BC. And if the old PS3 systems only played "25%" of PS2 games then they should fix that problem with the NEW FIRMWARE UPDATE. Is it really impossible to improve the older 60 gb PS3 BC? I think they can come up with something to improve that. Upscaling doesn't make a difference? Let them try to do it before you make that assumption. And having a wired controller is a hassle as I won't be able to lay far on the couch. You are really telling us how you feel and telling us that we should feel like you. You can't say that we should prefer to spend money on a physical PS2 when we don't want a physical PS2 at all. Are you a PS2 salesman? We don't want your stinking PS2. We want sometype of BC firmware for a good, decent price. Not $100 like the retail PS2.
