Does anyone else think that this was a plan from the beginning?

I think that Sony made the price very high so only the hard core gamers would buy and after the bluray player diode problem was fixed they stocked all of the stores. I work at a Target and their are boxes of PS3's in the back room and know that the price has dropped there is enough for everyone to buy without having to try to hard.

I think Sony was just over-confident.

no, they made the console, it sold good, they gained profit, so they could reduce it's price a bit, ultimately giving more profit.

Yup, I mean, they came off of two console victories, so it was only natural they would think they'd have no problems with people about the price.

plus the price for the blu ray in the ps3 production came down a bit so it only makes sense to take that extra money and use it to reduce the price and ramp up a newer 80gb with a game with the holiday season quickly approaching. even though its july people like to buy early so was a good idea

Well as bad as it seems when they say they just want to give us the bes price they can on the deal. They were lossing hundreds on each consoles at launch. The blu diode's were fixed an now are much cheaper to produce thus the ability to lower the price of the systems. Blu-ray standalone prices are also lowering their prices because of the fixing of that problem. I personally am fine with paying regular price for what i've got out of it personally.

I was pretty sure this is what they were going to do from the beginning, well minus getting rid of the 20gb of course. Considering they put the latest technology in their it was going to be expensive and as not only PS3 but stand alone Blu-Ray player production ramped up costs were sure to drop fast. I have to admit I was expecting the cut to come in November after a full year, but if they've been making profit off it and can afford it there's no time like the present.

We've gotta thank BlockBuster, their move definitely push BD sales to another level. Thus manufacturing cost of BD probably has DRAMATICALLY dropped, in which case SONY was very unlikely to expect the BD would've killed HD-DVD this early. Maybe that's why they set the PS3's price high at launch, just to cover some R&D cost of BD. But since the winner of next gen high-def is already there, it's a different story for SONY now. SONY can easily reallocate the cost into a longer timespan, i.e., the large trunk of cost for each single console is cut, giving them the capability to drop the price and remain profitable.
