Think about it: I've never met anyone with a name like Cole, I've never met a Drake, and I'm pretty sure that Sackboy and Ratchet ain't real names :P As anyone else noticed this? I'd like a video game name, but alas, my name is boring, unlike the above..

Cloud, tifa, Barret, Squall, Seifer, Tidus, Vaan, etc... the list goes on. I do know what you mean though. I think a lot of it has to do with character development. When a dev. is designing a character, they try to pick a name that represents that character and portrays that type of character that they're going for. Squall Leonhart? A squall is a sudden increase in wind speed; I think that applies to him. And leonhart? I think that's self explanatory. It's only one example, but you get the point.

And you're also using fictional species. Ratchet is a Lombax, Clank is a robot (which is actually kind of fitting), and I have no idea what Jak or Daxter are but they're not human. Snow and Fang could legitimately be names I guess since this IS from the Japanese :P Only really off the wall names there Vanille and Sazh.

This made me laugh because Rachet is a fury alien creature; no I haven't met a fury alien creature before.

Most of these are from games that take place in a fantasy/sci-fi world. If their world isn't like ours, why should their names be? I think it would be a little weird (and boring) to have an alien creature like Ratchet named "John".

Actually it's "yuki." "Suno" would be Engrish (language spoken by Japanese people who think they can speak English) for snow.
Back to topic: Names are just identificational words that we assign to things/persons. There might be usual ones like Sabrina or Steve but there's no law against calling your child Onion or Sausage. And while we usually refrain from giving such names to our real children we prefer giving more unique names to fictional persons we create.
It depends on the setting of the game. If it takes place in a sci-fi / fantasy world, i would expect it do have names to fit that setting. If it's in a modern day setting, they almost always have normal names.
