after i turn off my ps3 after playing for a few hours..i can hear it shutting it down then powering off. the fans stops spinning and so forth. then about 5 seconds later i hear a startling CLICK. the same kind of noise i would make if i were to flick the ps3 with my finger. is it supposed to make this noise? is overheating causing it to make this noise? my ps3 is the newer 120 gb ps3 slim.

You can't tell if mine is on or not (without looking at the green light of course).

Definitely due to heat. However, just make sure it can breathe. Apart from that there's not much you can do. Personally, mine is silent and is also a slim 120gb. My old fatty (R.I.P) used to click and pop after shut down though :D

Mine even does that during gameplay and for some time after. It's just the heat making the plastic inside the PS3 expand.

What you are hearing is the expansion and contraction of plastic and PCBs inside the system due to heating up and cooling down. It is entirely normal not just on PS3s but on many other components as well.

That exactly happens to me as well, and I was worried before reading this (thank you). Although I have noticed my PS3 only makes that noise with certain games, not with all of them :S

I have a slim and its been doing that for a year, its thermal expansion, I just wikied it. It made sense, and plus slim used more plastic than the old phat ones. I was very worried when I first got my console, but its still running fine so far.

Yes that happens to my PS3 which is also a launch 120GB slim. So it is almost 2 years old and has not given me any problems. The poping noise is normal. The sould of the plastic casing expanding then contracting after long PS3 gaming sessions.

It is normal this has happen ever since I got my slim at launch. I guess by now Sony must have used better plastic for the PS3 slim.

I hope thats sarcastic. I really hate the fact that Sony are building less quality products for a lower price to please a greater audience, but its the modest solution. Same thing happed to Vita, a shame but necessary.
