I'm thinking about getting this but was wondering exactly how does the combat system work in this game? Is it strictly turned based combat like in Final Fantasy where you issue commands to your party including your character? Or can you actually press a button to perform an attack or block for real time combat like in Zelda or Skyrim?

It's a mix. The combatants move in real-time on the battlefield but you pause the game to give orders (only the character controlled by you is commanded directly) and they do only single attacks in a pace that depends on their stats which has a turn-based feel to it. A bit difficult to explain, best you watch a video or try the DA2 demo.

If you do decide to play the Dragon Age series(witch I can highly recomend,) you should start from the beginning, with Dragon Age: Origins. The combat-system is based opun that of Bioware's old Baldurs Gate and Neverwinter Nights. It's strategic/action combat that, just like Mass Effect, allows you to pause at anytime, to issue ordersto your teammates. It does not take long to get the hang of it, and it totally KICKS *SS...

It's real time in a sense and not turnbased. You move one character around and pound the attack button while using different powers/buffs/potions that you have hotkeyed, switching between party members in combat. You can play it in real time on Casual, but after that it's a lot of pause and play action where you bring up the command wheel, scan the environment, and string together a bunch of commands.
