Hopefully I don't sound too dated when I say I own a Sony Bravia 46" released in 2009. After seeing the live stream, I can't help but be paranoid that the PS4 will look just like how my PS3 looked when I had a tube tv that projected 480p. I love my current Sony tv and is practically brand new, do you guys feel I'll need an upgrade? What are you guys doing?

Get what you can afford. For next gen I will play on my Panisonic ST at native 1080P. So I am ready for any game that supports 1080P.

If your TV can output 1080P Native than it should be fine. If not you might want to upgrade if you can afford it, as next gen 1080P and 720P will be the standard. So to get the most out of your games, it's nice to run them at the highest resolution. You can actually get cheap 1080P HDTV's at walmart. They really have went down in price.

I read on a couple of news sites Killzone: ShadowFall runs at native 1080P. As far as other games I am not sure. I am thinking with all that power we will see much more native 1080P games, but native 720P will also be used.

If you can afford it get a 1080P TV for next gen.

I'm wondering this myself. I've been using a 720p TV but I'm wondering if I should upgrade to a 1080p one.

I don't think you sound dated. I've got a Philips 30" tube HDTV that's 7 or 8 years old. I want to upgrade to something like yours before the PS4 comes out. I saw they've got 46" LED Samsungs on Amazon for like $600 (120hz, 1080p). I'm thinking I'll probably pick up one of those and a better surround sound system than what I've got.

It's not going to be like going from standard def to hi def.  Games will look sharper and more detailed in 1080p, but they'll look perfectly fine in 720p.  I'm planning on getting a 1080p TV one of these years, but it's not like you HAVE to run out and buy one immediately lol.

i'm not following. If your current tv is 1080p, why upgrade? They announced that the system won't play at 4k. You should be fine. The real question is, with good games still coming out for ps3 (gta5, etc.), did sony present an urgent need to upgrade to the ps4? My feeling is that they did not...

It's new, that alone makes it a must buy.

It's gonna be funny when people buy 1080p TVs for PS4 then 4K TV's start popping up everywhere... That's the experience I had with PS3 and 720p. I don't know if anyone here is old enough to remember but most early games didn't support 1080i, just 480i/p and 720p

By the time 4k TVs are affordable and useful I'd probably be looking for new tv anyways. Currently it's about every 3 years I get a newer bigger tv.

Not at all. Resolutions aren't changing like they did between this gen and the last.

I think that anyone who has a TV that can at least display 720p will be in great shape.  1080p is, of course, ideal, but 720p will still look great.

It's not like this will be the first time we're gaming in 1080p. There are a decent number of PS3 games in 1080p too.

People game on sub 1080p TVs? I thought that was already the standard. 720p will definitely cheat you. I looks noticeablely worse for movies so I assume that applies to games as well.

I have a 32" 720p from 2007. So yes the PS4 means a TV upgrade for me. Aiming for a 55"+ 1080p.

I believe I saw somewhere that Sony already stated that 4k will not be supported for games so if you already have a decent sized 1080p you should be fine. If you have a TV that doesn't support 1080p it's probably worthwhile to upgrade though since I would assume most, if not all PS4 games will run at native 1080p.

No, 1080p is not the standard. Most PS3 games run at 720p, some even lower.

1080p is the standard for movies and even Netflix even on PS3. I know the games run at 720p, but TVs are used for more than games.

NO, you don't need to upgrade to a better TV. The PS4 will look great on your TV. The PS4's main positive is it has 16 times the RAM memory of PS3. Yes it is a lot more powerful too, but current HDTVs are fine. The PS4 is more about being more gamer friendly and social and developer friendly easier to developer for etc. While adding in a lot of cool features and upgrades to the OS, camera, and controls.
