because 15% into the game and i find it to be quite underwhelming so far. i gauge using San Andreas (haven't played GTA4), which captivated me from start to finish. in contrary, there's very little personality felt in RDR so far. none of the characters were truly memorable, and I find Marston to be a pretty dull protagonist. action was solid, but the desolate backdrop is already wearing thin for me.

i have various other complaints but it ain't what this thread is about. I just wish to know if the game will get better later. Can i expect the story to become more engaging, missions more varied and characters more fleshed out as I play?

PS. in case you're wondering why i need to ask - i can still get rid of it now for a good bit of cash

Well the first couple of missions are the least interesting imo, But I would reccomend at least getting up to the sothern side of the map before deciding that you don't like it. Unmemorable characters??? I don't think so. RDR and asmost every GTA game have awesome casts of characters.

Story does get better but it's not the best story ever - the ending is love or hate and I loved it. I really liked Marston as a character... nothing like previous GTA characters!! The deserts and towns I find amazing... so much detail, always something around and at times when its barren land its fun to ride your horse, go hunting, do a side mission etc... they are almost as fun as the real missions! But I agree with other poster. Get to Mexico first and then see if you enjoy it, otherwise, just sell it! If getting to Mexico and doing a few missions doesnt convince you then you might as well sell and get a game you enjoy :) after all, some games arent for everyone.

I found the entire thing engaging and I loved John Marston's character. I thought the portrayal of the west was captured quite amazingly.

With that said, I can see why it isn't appealing right off the bat. But it does evolve. The game is really divided into 3 acts. Act 1 has some amazing moments (like everything you do with the Sheriff, and I like Bonnie) but has some silly characters and odd planning on their parts, and can get tedious.

Act 2 brings you to Mexico, which you might enjoy much more. You end up working in the middle of fighting factions during the Mexican Civil War and it's very combat centric and quick moving. The characters, interactions, and how you see how some people care about their country and others don't is interesting and I thought it was very well told. Most characters and events I remember are in Act 2 and especially 3, and you get so used to that mundane, desert setting that 3 is a huge change of pace. Course, I don't want to spoil anything.

I really enjoyed RDR. It's one of my favourite Rockstar games. The beginning was ok, aside from cow herding, and the end had a few interesting moments and probably the best character for a few missions.

Like the other posters, I recommend getting to Mexico. The missions and story are decent there and worth checking out.

However, Marston reminds a bland character, the story is fairly cliche and eventually there are some small plot hole-ish issues.

This game's almost all about the gameplay and cheating at poker.

Just make sure to hogtie one person and put them on the train tracks before you get rid of the game. I recommend the hellfire-type-street-preacher guy in the first town. He's just begging for it.

lol ok, sounds like a plan to me

seriously though, i sure hope it gets better. too bad it didn't start very well (imo, of course). back when playing San Andreas, within minutes after i started it had my full attention (Tenpenny:"see you round like a donut, hahahahahahah~~"). I started RDR expecting the same strong first impression but instead i saw 3 men walking down a street to a train station without a single word. things didn't quite pick up ever since. :?

***SPOILERS***

Yea i will have to admit I was pumped to get RDR and then when i got it, I was underwhelmed. But when the Marshall Johnson missions start thats when the **** starts getting fun! IMO the Mexican missions where the most fun and most interresting. But i'm already done with the game and i'm finding out things that i never knew about when i was playing RDR, trust me RDR is a great game, it starts slow but becomes real fun at the end.

About halfway through and personally it's more enjoyable than GTAIV. Never liked San Andreas so I'm not going to draw comparison to that.

Love the gritty, wild west setting, I get giddy everytime I play because it's like stepping into a western flick. People get put off by many of RDR's casts' personalities, I however can appreciate the fact that R* is trying to bring some realism into this fictional world where its inhabitants aren't just clear-cut black and white characters but rather shades of gray.

OMG ROFL! The hogtying and leaving someone on the traintracks is classic. I never thought of doing it though until you said something, AAAHAHAHA! I'm glad I popped into Gamespot forums, even if the only thing I walk away with is knowledge of new mayhem to participate inwith RDR lol.

For me the game was pretty interesting in the beginning cause you are just starting, but yes it is a bit boring in the beginning, then it picks up after a hour in and then to me it gets worse, and then way better lol. its quite the rollercoaster :P.

It doesnt really, its pretty much the samething throught the whole game, the gameplay that is. The gameplay stays the same, and the story isnt all that greats and not really intense and nothing exciting really happens

this was the worst highest rated game i have ever played, the missions were all the same, the side missions were all the same, there was no rewarding features, it got very boring very fast. i got to blackwater and was so disapointed that i didnt bother with finishing the game and sold it quickly after.

John Marston a great character? Character design wise, he looks pretty cool, but as a personality, as a character, he flat out sucks. One moment he's doing odd jobs and missions for everyone, trying to make people happy, one moment he's PO'ed about something. He's too diplomatic for my taste. I like my characters to be one way or the other. John Marston the Diplomat..

It's pretty simple it's GTA4 with a western theme. So basically some interesting missions, but after while it's been there done that.

It's way over-hyped, and much like GTA4 should not have gotten the high score it did. Other than that it's an ok game, and is ok to play, if you don't mind quite a few glitches and bugs. I'm not sure how it received a 9.5 with all the glitches in it, but then again this is Gamespot.

So to the original topic I would say no it really doesn't get that much better. If you find it boring now, it will be boring later.
