You have it right, Matt. The last PS3 model to have any sort of BC for PS2 games was the MGS bundle. The launch systems (20 GB and 60 GB models) had the actual PS2 chipset inside as well so they have the most backward compatibility. The early 80 GB systems have software-based BC which, while not as robust, plays quite a few games. The 40 GB has no PS2 BC whatsoever.

Ask at theretailers. That's what I did, and when I couldn't find a used PS3 that was backwards compatible, I gave up and just bought a new 80GB bundle.
I may be mistaken but, I think on PSN my friend said there was a DL for emulation. Not sure. It's not something I've had to worry about tho I own one of the 60GB from launch.
