Just wondering because my PS3 is in my TV stand on a shelf. I was wondering if the PS3 needs to be in a more open area. It'd be helpful if people post their set up so I can get a better idea as to where else I should put my PS3.

its a good idea, i mean its going to get hot like anything else after long use i have mine out in the open. Its just a good idea to let it have as much air flow as possible

Yes, I had my wall unit's glass door closed when i first watched Talledega Nights, and when I opened it, my ps3 sounded like it was going to explode, it made the 360 sound quiet.

Also is it a good idea to keep a small fan or something blowing towards the PS3 to help keep the system cool?

If the PS3 is in a open area it will never over heat unless the fan fails. As for having a extra fan blowing on the system it's not needed as well as those coolers. I haven't turned my system off in months and it has never overheated. As long as air can flow through the system it won't overheat.

If the PS3 is in a semi open area, does the small fan help? DOes the cooler air being blown towards the Ps3 help keep the PS3 cool and stop the PS3 from setting its fans on the higher speeds?

the quick answer would be yes, put it in a open area. but if u dont want it sitting out in the open, as i dont, then u just have to do a little extra work. i have mine in my tv cabinet along with my 7.1 stereo, so yeah it can get hella hot real quick. so i just set up a pusher/puller fan setup in the extra wiring holes. plugged it into the stereo so it comes on when ever the stereo is on. only problem i have now is huge dust bunnies because its pulling air in from behind the tv...

Alright...so I played a few hours in the semi closed space, and then moved my PS3 to a more open area. I discovered that My after a while, my PS3 would still go to the higher fan setting even though it was outside(not the highest fan setting but higher than the setting of when u turn on the PS3). Does this mean that I have an adequate amount of space in my semi closed area?

Well, I know that at least with the Wal-Mart that is closest to me, they have their playable 360 and PS3 in the same rack where they store the games in in plain sight (and pretty cramped). The 360 had an RRoD once, and I think they'd since replaced the defective unit and got a better one, since I've not seen any further RRoD's from it, in spite of the cramped location. OTOH, the PS3 must apparently get too hot for that, because there is visible warping of the metal rack that it sits in there.

The thing I noticed is, you gotta be careful if you set it on it's side rather than flat. There are air holes on the right hand side, so if you set it up vertically, you want to make sure that those air holes are up and not against the floor or tv stand because then the air isn't getting to it properly.

my PS3 sits out in the open.

One thing i have personally noticed is that depending on how it sits makes a difference. Originally I had it laying flat on the ground this worked fine but after a few hours sometimes the noise would increase a bit. Now I have it standing on its side and I never hear any increase in the noise.

I also think it looks cooler standing on its side :p
