Yes, it upconverts... buy FYI for DVD movies it only upscales if it's hooked up through HDMI.

what exactly does upscaling do. I know it doesn't make my old DVDs high-def, so what makes it so good?

It just scales the picture to be 720/1080 instead of the default 480 resolution. Sure, it's not Blu-ray quality video; but it still does make it look a bit better. Especially on HDTVs where standard definition video (480) doesn't always look great on.

Yes, this is KEY. If you hook up your PS3 with component cables, you won't be able to upscale your normal dvds or old PS games. I'm not sure about DVI/VGA though.

Actually, its only movies that require an HDMI cable to upscale. Games will work with component or hdmi.

i was planning on buying an HDMI cord for my PS3 anyway, is there a huge difference between the $100 monster cables and the $10 ones at wal mart? thanks for all the responses.

It upscales PS2 games also to give near HD resolutions. I've tried it with many PS2 games, looks sweet!!

If it's less than 6 ft or so, there's really no difference. So save your money.

yes, and well.

but it depends on the movie, dont watch one and it be not amazing and then be all wtf. mess with the settings on both your ps3 and your tv to get it to play best, some movies i have that look amaing are transformers, 300, brother bear (kiddie disney movie but it literally looked almost blu ray quality) and phantom of the opera.

not that it probably ahs to be the widesreen version of the film for it to work well. not for sure tho

Have you played god of war 2 upscaled? the game looked pretty good as a whole but a couple of the in game cut scenes had really bad jaggies. Other ps2 games i tried look mint though, including resi 4.

Yes it does and the nice thing is it's one of the best upscalers on the market. And with the latest firmware updates it has gotten to be the best Blu-Ray player on the market with the disc player 2.0 firmware that so far no other Blu-Ray has. There is one thing that many seemed to miss is that the 40 gig PS3 doesn't support any PS2 games while it does support PS1 games.

yes it does upscale but if you are looking for a really good job use a pc.

i have my pc connected to my tv and my ps3 also connected to the same tv and my pc does a far better job at upscaling dvds and video files to hd than the pcs does. the ps3 has a lot of pixilation with low resolution video files in 720p the pc does a perfect job. i have also noticed pixilation with cartoons which shouldnt really happen with a cartoon.

anyway if u really want a good upscaler use a pc

upscaling is just an illusion : the player/TV just fills in the missing points (1280x720 compared to 704x480) and displays the colors better, it works very well for 15% movies, no better for 65% movies, looks like crap for 20% movies.
