I bought my Ps3 about a year ago mainly as a gaming-console but also to to serve as a way to watch blueray movies on my then brand new hd-tv. I have thought about a thing though, does watching alot of bluera movies wear out the laser on the console quicker and should i therefore be a little more cautios to how many i subjest it to. At the moment me and my fiance watch about 5 of em a month. Is this something i should worry about?

Of course it does, at least to some minimal extent. I'm not sure if it's quite as strenuous as games that do alot of loading, because some games you can audibly here it "seeking" on the disc, whereas when a movie playback is going on it doesn't seem to put much strain on the mechanism. However the fact you have a disc in their spinning is of course going to be wear and tear on the drive. For that reason I bought a standalone blu-ray player. I only paid $69 for a Panasonic model during the holidays last year, so there's really no point not to get a cheap blu-ray player. I definitely watch more than 5 per month though, more like 20 per month for me.

I'm sure it strains it little over time but its meant to play blu-ray disks, be it movies or games. I wouldn't worry much about it. Me and my wife watch blu-ray movies every weekend and sometimes few evenings for the last 3 years on our PS3 without problems. Not to mention, we both use it for games as well.
