So who else thinks DLC is a waste of money? Paying $2.99 for a character costume. I know it costs money to develop those things but lets all be serious. At the same time I cant picture a gamer shelling out money just for a character costume, but I know there are those who do.

I just think its ridiculous and even insulting for companies to do that. They should give us DLC for free just for supporting their product and charge us when the DLC is actually worth our money. Map packs (not maps) and expansions are great but costumes and weapons such as the MGS4 gun in LBP are ridiculous. I hate how Sony and MS wont allow TF2 to get free updates even though the PC version gets free updates frequently. Oh well, what can we do.

I wouldn't get costumes for like resistance 2 but i have for lbp. it is kinda cheap but as long as companies get money they could care less. The mgs4 lbp dlc had more than a gun tho. It had levels and trophies also. But we we NEVER get free dlc for big games.

I agree in a sense, I have Cod5 on the PC and all the new maps and Nazi Zombies are updated. It's great. Updates always add a new element when the game is becoming dry and that's what brings you back to the game. Isn't that what the companies what? Happy customers with their products? These updates keep us happy and remind us of what an awesome game it is that we'll BUY the sequel to support them. Some of those DLC are ridiculous, I agree it sucks to be "excluded" from some of the items. I always feel that if you have to buy something it should only be things that are "excessive" and "luxury" not like mapspacks but more like "PSN themes or psn games" Updates should be free for everybody!

Ya i dont understand who buys the costumes and crap like that and the whole paying for a theme thing is downright hilarious. However, someone must be buying this stuff or they wouldn't keep coming out with it. It also kills me to be paying $10 for a map pack that pc users get for free but i have definately spent money on dumber and more useless things.

Depends on the content. Costumes and so are a waste IMO, but new map packs or whole new levels are ok.

They'll keep charging for dumb stuff as long as dumb people keep buying them (seriously, who pays for those premium themes). I have no problem paying for DLC if it adds value and is reasonably priced though.

I'm completely ok with paying for the costume packs in littlebigplanet, its not nearly as bad as the pricing scemes of many F2P MMO games (buy an emocon for your character that lasts 3 months) and they have given quite a few costumes away for free. I buy costume packs for the ones I'm really interested in like the MGS4 costume pack and I'll be buying the Heavenly sword and team ico costume packs eventually. The DLC for Valkyria Chronicles was also well worth the price IMO.

There are really only a few things that I've felt were complete ripoffs like the SC4 downloadable content where you paid $5 to get the other systems "exclusive" character.

It definitely depends on what it is. There is a few DLCs i've gotten that sucked and some that were well worth it. There are some things (like what capcom did with RE5 and SF4) that are nothing more than shameless attempts at getting more money. New campaign levels (as long as they are good) are certainly worth it to me. Selvaria campaign for Valkyria Chronicles FTW

DLC is nothing more than a way to get us to spend more of our money.
Compare RE4's overall package to RE5's.
Or Street Fighter IV. Paying for costumes? Why isn't that a simple unlockable?

It's sad how times have changed, and it'll most likely only get worse.

I just bought the Team Ico LBP costume pack. It's the only thing I've actually purchased as an add-on for a game. I just happen to be a Team Ico fan, so I couldn't resist. None of the other costume packs for that game have appealed to me.

you dont think companies should just give us DLC just for supporting them and their products? youre essentially saying that its fine for companies to rip customers off.

If you really enjoy a game and a $1.99 purchase will make you personally enjoy it that much more, then it's money well spent.

Depends on the situation, For example the DLC which came out for RE5 is a waste of time personally however if a game has been out for a few months and they had extra maps (like Killzone 2, Halo 3, Gears of war ect) then that's the stuff I would buy with out thinking about it.

However the free DLC is by far the best ones (Thank you Epic for the UT3 titan pack :D)

It depends of the DLC. If its costumes or something similar, the yes its a complete waste and the content should have been on the disk. However if it stuff like map packs or new tracks, especially if its for downloadable games like Wipeout, then its fine in my opinion. Just as long as its priced properly.

it is not a waste of money if you got extra. The better question is do you think companies are trying to nickle and dime more money out of people by releasing a game with holes in it that people need to pay for to get the real game experience.

As I said in regards to RE5 and even some of the stuff featured on the SFIV DLC pretty much all of the extra outfits and RE's online mode should have been included in the game from the start, so i would avoid those like hell. For me the only time I would even look at DLC is when you get new maps which have either been recreated from a past game to use in a new game or when they put the effort into giving you an additional experience within the same game so look at The lost and the Damned as perhaps one the best examples of creating something which can cross over and expand a gaming experience.

erglesmergle

Uhmmm...the MGS4 DLC for LBP included costumes, more trophies, new creator content (including the gun) and 5 MGS themed levels/story for you to play through. It wasn't JUST for a gun.

Second, I have in the past bought some of the other costumes for LBP. I had a couple buck sitting in my wallet and thought, "why not?"

Third, LBP has released a number of free costumes for people and I believe have more coming in the future.

Finally, the whole point of offering DLC is that you have an option to buy it or not. NObody is forcing you to buy it. If you don't think it is worth the money, then who cares...don't get it. Why whine about it?

However, I will totally agree with people who have pointed out the complete rip-off of DLC like with Street Fighter 4, where the items are already on the disc you have bought...they just don't let you use them until you pay money. THAT is a rip off. If it is already on the disc I paid money for, I shouldn't have to pay again to use it.

The DLC is there to breath extra life into a game you might toss aside. You don't have to buy it, but Sony's not a charity company and seeing how many people shell out cash for small things, DLC is quick and easy profit. You would probably do the same if you were trying to make money. For those of us who love the games we play, DLC is cheap and worth it. For those who complain, well at least you don't have to pay a monthly fee AND pay for DLC :) Heck you don't even have to get the DLC at all.

If the DLC doesn't change the gameplay like costumes/skins, then it is a waste of money.

I love these passive ways of dismissing a rising problem. "Either you buy it, or you don't"

Guess what? At this rate we might be asked to pay more to even play the freakn' game. Devs are taking out feature that are already in the game. Do you really want to find out how far this is going to go? I sure as hell don't. I think this "video game laundering" really needs to stop. People like these (mention above) are apart of the problem. Because guaranteed you won't be singing the same tune when it begins to affect you.

I really think DLC needs to be regulated in some way. There needs to be some rules in place. I can see DLC that adds something that currently isn't in the game that comes out long after it's release. But DLC upon launch? That's already programmed in the game that can really, just be unlocked? Or that stunt with EA, paying for cheats??

I don't know about you. But I see a serious problem here. Especially when it's assumed that we're dumb with money to burn. "What's $1.99 right?" Then again, there are some really bright people paying for virtual chairs in Home. It eventually grows when they think they can change the hook and bait on the fishing line.

I'm all for "true DLC". But I hate the abuse of it by companies.

Hate to say it, but again, don't buy it. If a game is released and you feel it's shorted on features for future DLC, again, don't purchase that game. More games than not are fully featured and have a lot of content out of the box.

Depends when it is released

If it comes out within 3 months of the game launching it is a total rip off

DLC is just fine when it is done right. I get infinitely more hours out of RB2 because of their DLC.

The only DLC that is okay is DLC that affects gameplay and is known to be created after the game has launched. The Vallkyria DLC for instance was an addition that wasn't intended for the disc. That's what DLC should be.

Hold your tongue there because in the latest iPhone update they released a game that was capable of downloading add-ons. Guess what's next to follow.....DLC. On the subject of it being a waste of money, most people here have made the comment "if it adds value". Well guess what, what adds value is based on opinion between people.
