Are there any characters that are missable? I know of Loughain and how if you take him then you lose alistair, but is it possible to obtain any other characters (apart from story ones) at any time?

Sten and Leilana can be missed. They both appear at Lothering. Also, there's this rogue elf (forgot his name, it's been a while since I played it), that appears as a random encounter with his gang. If you defeat them you have the choice to kill him while he's unconscious. If you wake him up you can recruit him.

Four of them are missable. Leliana and Sten can be missed as you can't go back to Lothering after you leave. Zevran can be missed if you decide to kill him when he tries to assassinate you. Wynne can be missed if you decide to kill her to carry on the Right of Attunement. As a side note, if one of them starts to hate you they might leave or even try to kill you.
Theres also Shale the DLC character who you can miss. You can also miss the dog, if you aren't playing as a human noble.
I'm sure several characters are "missable" if you don't talk to them, or choose to not recruit them (pretty sure you can kick many of them out of your party at any time as well, that option seemed to be there for most of them). I happened to get them all on my 1st playthrough as a human noble because I tend to take my 1st playthroughs very thoroughly and explore everything, but on my 2nd playthrough as a different character I used the dragon age wiki to get all the romances and whatnot the way I needed to get all the PSN trophies. If you want to check out what possible party members there are I'd check that out.
It was also interesting the way you could make all the interactions differ completely depending on your friend/rivals status or if you had a romance going. In my 3 total playthroughs I had SEVERAL different characters betray me at various stages of the game depending on my friendship status, or if they didn't like the choice I was making on a quest. Usually the betrayal would happen on a specific quest, triggered by a combination of their friendship status, the decision you were making, and if they were in your active party or not. If they betrayed you basically they would join up with your foes and you'd have to fight with 3 instead of 4.
For example If you don't have a high enough friendship for Zevran late in the game, he might double cross and you attack when you encounter the Crows near the end. He will ambush you whether he is in your active party (of 4) or not. I actually found if very difficult building his friendship high enough for him NOT to turn against me during the 2nd Crow ambush. And when he did turn against my party I actually had a hell of a time beating him and his crew with only 3 remaining party members. I'm not sure, but I think you need to be in a full romance with him at the time for him to not attack you.
yeah, and i think thats the more compelling mechanic. if i accidentally missed a character, it would be no sweat off my back because i wouldnt know what im missing. its much more dramatic to have a character you know leave you. also, its not always a matter of making a character really hate you. one character may leave you simply for not liking you a great deal. many more will leave if you make one decision they really dont like regardless of how much they like you.Four of them are missable.
