Dual Shock 3 Inquiry

Hello, I'm thinking of purchasing a couple of Japanese Dual Shock 3 controllers from Play-Asia. I was wondering, is the controller compatible with U.S. Playstation 2 games? I have a pair of U.S. PS3 60 gigs. I just want to make sure i'm not throwing my money away by importing.
