I'm actually curious as I'm finding it quite enjoyable... in a lowbrow kinda way
Albeit I'm only half a dozen or so levels in but so far my only complaint would be the excessively long loading times for such small areas.

The game was just released too late. Had it come out in 06/07, it would have seen better reviews. Level design, voice acting, etc, are archaic at this point in tim.
It's one of those games I'll pick up when it hits under $10, for the nostalgia, because I played the original when it came out a century ago. But the demo showed me enough that my conviction remained it should have stayed a footnote in history. Some things are better off dead, as the Frankenstein Monster said. It's not unplayable, it's just not very polished.
I like taking the poop out of the toilet, though. That made me giggle...
Duke: "OhNOoo! What're you DOING?!?"
Guess I'm still a juvenile gamer, after all these years...

LOL I'm actually fond of the über-cheesy voice acting. Then again, my all-time fav voice acting was that of the original Resident Evil
I'd have to agree with the level design though. So far each area has been really small and certainly linear which is the reason I wonder why the game takes so damn long to load

Because a ton of it was made over a decade ago, and they didn't want to spend the money to optomize it but instead, simply to complete it. It's like taking a K-car from the 1980s, and giving it new seats and a lick of paint. I'm firmly in the camp of "If You Like It, It's Good" though. You should see some of the crap on MY shelf that no one would want...
... I mean...
... I just bought "LAIR" for $4.
Yeah, I said it, I bought "LAIR".
And for what it is, I'm enjoying it, and certainly will get $4 of fun out of it. The patch for analog stick control makes a big difference in the playability, but I know at heart that most gamers think it's tripe. But so what...
If you like the Duke, I say more power to ya. It'll be on my shelf one day, when it's "LAIR"-priced.
:P

I managed to pick it up for $12 so certainly no complaints here ;)
I wasn't a FPS fan back in the day so this is my first outing with the Duke. I figured much of the negative press may have been due to this game leaving somewhat of a sour taste in the mouth of fans that grew up with the original. IMO Gamespot's 3/10 seems extremely harsh.

That IS pretty bad... but not as bad as Forever according to GS ;)
I received it with my console way prior to the patch. The game definitely intrigued me but the sixaxis-only controls... Not so much. Sold it the very next day. I know where you're coming from though, I too have enjoyed many a critically panned game. This thread is proof! :P
Duke Nukem Forever is a great game, but I think most people expect too much from it. It is not meant to be an uber elaborate FPS like so many others on the market today. You got to love it for what it is, which is a rehash of the original kick ass, no sense required, all action old school FPS that many of us spent our childhood playing. It is all about babes, bullets, bombs and gore galore :D
Am I the only one who thought the retro Duke Nukem games were terrible in addition to Forever?

This is not a put-down when I ask this -
How old are you?
Often, one's perceptions of this hobby are linked to their age... I still love Atari 2600 games. But that was the console when I was 14, so my perspective is very different than a lot of people on this forum when it comes to seeing the beauty in "retro" titles. If you didn't see Nukem back in the day as a fresh thing, and you started with an N64 or later, you're probably not going to have the nostalgia level required to appreciate the original Nukem games. But the Duke was one of the first games to use up-down aiming... Before the Duke, you had games from iD Software (Wolfenstein 3D, DOOM) which never went into that plane of control. Old-School Duke was an innovator in a lot of ways.
From a critical standpoint, it's a pretty bad game. Going into it with low expectations and toning my brain down, I actually had some fun with it. It definitely feels like a game that could have been released several years ago, but I did get a few chuckles out of it. It's too bad there were too many dull running around moments. It was worth the rent though, and at this point you can find it for like $5-$10, so to anyone who actually wants to play it, you might as well just buy it :lol:SoNin360
Sow it for $11 at Game Stop today... Almost pulled the trigger. But "F3AR" and a few other games on my to-buy list are also ridiculously low-priced, so I will pro'ly get those first. But I WILL buy it, someday...
