Dumb questions about PS3

I've been playing nothing but Nintendo platforms and games for several years now with the exception of my PS2. Recently I've gotten Rock Band on my PS2 and the PS3 bundle for the hardware, and I've realized two things. The PS2 version sucks in comparison and I have a copy of the PS3 game and no PS3 to play it with. Now I'm considering buying a PS3 so I can experience the true Rock Band game and maybe play The Orange Box as well, but because I have almost no knowledge of the PS3, could someone please answer me these questions:

1) Do you have to pay for online play?

2) How much does the PS3 usually cost?

3) Does the PS3 require an HDTV?

4) Are there any specific problems with the PS3 console?

Well there have been some issues about the ps3 not reading discs.

thanks a bunch for the answers. But I just have one more question to confirm something. Are all models of the PS3 compatible with standard definition TVs or are only certain models compatible with SDTVs?nintendo_fan135

they are all compatible with a SDTV

Buy the PS3, it is great, you don't have to have a HDTV but like one person said it makes it much prettier to look at. Also, check your local Blockbuster to see if they are running a PS3 bundle right now. I have one in my area (VA Beach) right now selling an 80Gb w/Motorstorm, a couple BD movies and some other cool accessories for $499. I sorta wish I wouldn't have bought one for my Chrismas present now after seeing the bundle at Blockbuster. Oh well, hindsight is 20/20 as they say.
