Ok I see this game did great on Gamespot's reviews on both systems. So, with trusting Gamespot I rent the game. And man can someone please tell me what is the big deal about this product? Yea, from a programming stand point this game is a 9.5/10(minor framerate issuses), but from a gamer's it is at best an 7/10. This is just my opinion and from going from previous posts I read I am not alone.

So, why the score? And yea I know you can do anything but if everything you do is boring what fun can come from that?

I've played all of the main questline and guild quests on both the 360 and PS3 versions of Oblivion. IMHO it is 1 of the best, if not the best game ever made. When I first played it I was bored stupid, I left it for a couple of months, then I tried again, and it clicked. I love the way things you do interact with the rest of the world, I love all the stupid side quests, and the story was just great. I believe the scores were exactly right.

I played about 10 minutes on PC, and wasn't a fan. I would like to give it more of a chance.

I kinda agree. I played though it once and loved it. Started a second play through and im starting to realize so many bugs, glitches and what not with the game and i really just started to find it kinda boring, for example have you even noticed that when you talk to the beggars they have like 2 different voices sometimes? I think it should of got like a 8.5 but it is still a great game.

The crazy thing is I like games like that. I loved Jade empire and Fable so I was excited about this one, but it just did nothing for me.

I TOTALLY agree with you, no offense to anyone who believes it is awesome.
Firstly, well yeah I like how you can choose your life, and you have the capability to do many, many things. Actually, there is actually SO many things to do other than the main story that you can get sidetracked by, and SUCH a big world, that IMO I think its a bit too much. While I was playing, the world was just so vast and so many thieves etc. all around, it was SO hard for me to reach my destination when i first started the game with low HP and strength etc.
Also, the fighting was SO dull and boring, I just couldn't take it. If I ever saw an enemy, I would usually get bored after landing one hit, and get on a horse and ride away.

But on the other hand, I like the freedom you have within the game to do what you want. If you want to become a "bad boy" and steal and kill innocent people and hit and run guards, you can do so. You can rush into a farm and steal a horse and gallop away with some guards on your tail. Or you can be the innocent hero, that saves people from thieves and never gets on the nerves of a guard etc.

Keeping all these facts in mind, I would give this game a 7.5/10, maybe a bit more.

But in the end, to answer your question, yes i think its overrated and thank god I made the decision to rent it instead of buying it at the last moment..

i would give it an 8. what are your reasons you dislike it so?

i like the open world, customizable characters, visuals, etc. only think i dont like about it...its too open...and the monsters level with you...making it to the point only a mage has a chance at surviving at high levels.

I loved the ability to do and control everything too, but it was all so dull and boring. The fighting system was horrible. The story was kinda weak and did not keep my attention. They did have a lot of voice acting and recording, but their faces gave no emotions. It was like the people in the game were just as bored as you were. The music did not help either. in short, it seemed as if the game tried its best to put you asleep.

But I am not knocking people who likes it... I am just saying it is not my cup of tea.

I am a huge fan of RPGs and I couldnt play through Oblivion

I don't know what everyone loved about it, the fact that you could 'do' anything, I guess that was cool, the story wasn't that immersful to me

It felt like a MMORPG, it felt sort of like FFXI the way you could do your own thing, but it wasn't a MMORPG, it was just you, so it really felt like I wasn't accomplishing anything, very very dry to me

But I don't think it's the worse probably that Dynasty Warriors gundam, that looked and reviewd really bad, or something that you don't really hear about

Well i think it deserves its 9.5 because it is a great game but... its hard to have a good battle on screen when the Frame rate drops significantly enough to hinder gameplay. It also acks something but iam not sure, something that makes it stagnant after a while.

I play it occasionally because i gwet that sought of "players block" in it when i just cant sem to go on for some reason and thats what holds me back. But overall it is still a must buy and i really, really hope thy make another one with even better gameplay and higher frame rate and better more creative spells.

It's not the type of game you can just pick up and play. You have to invest in a lot of time. The reason it got a high score is one word: DEPTH; there is just sooooo much to do and so many places to go

its a little overrated imho. i wouldnt give it a 9 since, overall, its not as good as morrowind (morrowinds brilliant, combat is poor though) but i still think its a very good game.

its not for everyone though, the elder scrolls games are about doing ure own thing in a big world...like an MMORPG but offline. its about playing the game the way u want to play and exploring the world, finding its secrets. if u prefer to have a detailed narrative and a more linear game then get another game. if u want a clear beginning, middle and end and a set objective at all times then get another game. if ure not into doing ure own things and dealing with the consequences then get another game.

I dont think the game is over-rated, since i've played it for hours and hours none stop. But it does get repetitive when going through the oblivion gates, and can sometimes be fustrating.

Exactly. It's not a game where it carries you a long within just the story/quest. There's also so much more to the exploration. I can't count how many fun battles I've had just walking a long a road. Some times the Imperial Knights will help me, sometimes they get killed, sometimes they come after me since one of my fire balls hit them. RUN AWAY!

Check this out. I bought the original game when it came out (last March was it?). Anyways. I got it and was like, "Whoa!" This game is long and complex. I put in a couple days. And then got bored and put it down for 7 months. I started playing NGS and WH (also have some PS2 games). Last month I picked up Oblvion and started to try it again. My friend at work said that it's not wise to pick a player that is the "jack of all trades." I was trying to be a 50% fighter and 50% magic user. It wasn't fun. I was not great at anything. Just good/good. He said that he was more like this: 80% figher, 10% mage, 10% thief/sneak. So, I delted my save file and started again. My character? Mage/Mage! YEAH! BABY! My stats? 90% Mage, 5% steath/sneak, 5% fighter (short sword/dagger). But my main weapon is my magic and staff! This time it's fun! And the game took off for me. Next time I'm going to try out 90% fighter and go looking for things to HIT! OH, and I've put in about 80-100 hours so far.

I agree. I understand why not everyone likes. But it's not just 10-20 hour game. Most can complete it in 150-200 hours if they rush. The guys in the Bethesda forums have put in 1500-2500 hours with all the mods and expansions.

I think the game was great, but it had many bugs(in some cases I would kill someone who was needed in a later quest), and it could have had a few more quests(not to buy like the shivering isles, for free).

Yeah I really hated this game. The only reason I played it for a 100 hours was.... there was nothing else on the 360 at the time.

True the world is huge but it's lifeless. No interesting plot and interacting with one lifeless NPC after the next.

Also the quest were very repetitive. It seemed like every mission I was on led me to some dark uninspired dungeon under ground. The only good quest was the Vampire Hunting quest other than that this game was all ZZZ's. I want character and Story in my RPG's , and Oblivion dose not offer either.

Also a note... there is no pay off. I spend countless hours crawling in Dungeons and serving the Wizards Guild's every whim and when I finally become head of the guild.... nothing happens. You get your achievement points and your fellow Wizards still refer to you as apprentice :?

Oh, wait.Yes. You are right. Some one said that it's a 30-50 hour game if you just complete the main quest. But if you get all the expansions and explore. You can extend the game. For example, you don't have to just do the quest. Some times you can just rank up by walking around and going to do dungeons for the fun of it. Other times I go and get weapons and armor and sell them. I rank up my power which takes time. This is before I even do quest. I have a lot of quest saved up. And I have barely started Knights. And have not touched Shivering. So, I was talking about Oblvion, Nights, and Shivering for 150-200. The rest is up to you on how much time you spend just exploring. Which I do.

I guess it depends on what kind of gamesa personlikes. For example I don't like games like Oblivion, and that's why I would give it a 0/10, not because the game is bad, but because I hate that genre. And I would give Heavenly Sword a 9/10, because that style better. So, to me Oblivion is boring and dull, but not overrated because I guess for someone that likes that kind of games would be a 9/10.

I will quote a paragraph from my review of Oblivion for you

the problem in this game is there is so much to get used to and the first tutorial like bit doesn't exactly show you how to do it all. You can spend a few hours before you get fully used to all the controls and features in the game which can almost feel like the game isn't that fun at first. Stick at playing it and get used to it and chances are you will end up loving it.

At first I hated ES Oblivion because I'm used to RPGs like FF, KOTOR and Jade Empire where the story and quests are very linear. In ES games they give you this huge world with characters and quests and it's up to you to explore, meet characters and find quests and for people who aren't used to that it can be overwhelming and boring at first because you feel like you're aimlessly wondering and getting nowhere. Besides that you have the character building thing that can be overwhelming and boring. I spent days just leveling up, some people might find it boring hoping around for hours trying to build up your acrobatic skill. This game definitely isn't for everyone those of us who do like the game like it because it's so deep and you get this feeling that you're in control and you're apart of this huge world that has a life of it's own. In other RPG games it feels more like an interactive movie where everything is set up and all you do is direct your character through the pre-determined path.

Well i think it deserves its 9.5 because it is a great game but... its hard to have a good battle on screen when the Frame rate drops significantly enough to hinder gameplay. It also lacks something but iam not sure, something that makes it stagnant after a while.

What it's lacking is the ability to make distinctly different characters. In the end almost every character is the same, who doesn't have summon at 100? The only levelling stretegy in this game is kinda boring, level up your minor skills to ensure a +5 bonus to three stats before levelling your major skills and gaining a level. there should be more birth signs like the 'Atronach' that significantly alter how you play your character. Also, I would like there to be skill limits for the various races so that if you want to reach 100 in a certain skill you have to play the correct race to do so, and make the abilities gained with the skill at 100 incredible. Basically, I would just like more strategy in character creation and levelling that leads to vastly different characters.

Also, I would change how you gain skill in magic. You can only gain skill in your combt skills by having an enemy to fight, but you can cast low levels spells over and over to gain skill in magic skills. You can even create spells that cost one point of magicka, even for destruction. It gets boring casting these spells every where you go. A quick fix would be to change it so that you only gain skill in magic when casting spells that are equal to your current rank in that skill or one rank lower. You could still spam spells but it would cost you more magicka. They could then lower how many times you have to cast a spell to level that skill. Hopefully this would lead to using spells when you need them more than just spamming them.

At any rate, I really enjoyed this game and put over 200 hours into it, but haven't played in at all for 4 months.

yeah, i'm with the TC on this one... I did invest about 25-30 hours into it, but I could never finish it though cuz it just couldn't keep my attention anymore. I don't really like the vast/complex games so the vastness of the world and the fighting is what put me off. It was nice to be choose what you wanted to do in the game, but I think it was just a little too much. But I can at least see why a lot of people liked it... it just didn't fit my tastes. :)
