This is soooo wetarded!

Starting now, retailers are not allowed to sell English-Only videos games unless a a French version is available.

So companies will now be forced to have a french version of their game if they wanna sell it in Quebec. What does this mean? It means I'll be buying all my games online from now on as I sure do not want to wait months of delay because of FRENCH!

I waited for Rock Band 2 for a while because of this last x-mas, I ending up buying it online because I didn't wanna wait. If anything, this law will hurt retailers in a time where it is already hard to make ends meet.

Quebec is wetarded!

That's really weird. I didn't realise there was so many French people in Quebec (obviously I knew there was a lot but not so much to justify such a law).

Yeah, but if an item is banned from being sold in Canada, amazon.ca will not risk carrying it.

But is that for real at all, or just some late April's fool joke?

It's not being restricted in all of Canada...only in Quebec.

I really hate this province sometimes.

Oh well, guess I'll be making an account at Amazon.ca or having plenty of road trips to Plattsburgh, lol

Not to mention that prices at futreshop, bestbuy, gamebuzz & eb(gamestop) have gone up by $10

with amazon.ca..even after taxes it's cheaper that the base $69.99 price

And if you pre-order..you save even more (amazon raises the price a very little once launch date arrives ... and it's still cheaper)

Wow. I never knew that about Amazon.ca. That could really save me quite a bit of money. Now I really have to look into doing all my game shopping there.

Cactus_Matt

We're 80% of francophones here in Quebec. That's more than enough to justify a law.

On the subject, as a gamer, I gotta admit I'm not pleased to know I could have to wait longer to get my games but as a Quebecois, I feel such measure is not only justified but necessary to help preserve our culture. With the number of francophones residing in Quebec getting slimmer by the year, our government has to do everything it can to insure the Quebecois culture doesn't dissappear into oblivion, and preserving its language is a vital step.

I don't expect Canadians here on the board to understand what it is to be a Quebecois witnessing the slow dissolution of his/her cultural identity. Wether you like it or not, Quebec - being a majorly French-speaking nation - holds a special place, firstly on the Canadian territory and secondly, in the whole North American continent. Anybody who knows at least a bit of our history can't remain insensible to our case. So please, if you only can only do one thing, don't disrespect us.

I don't know what it is with Gamespot's community but every single time someone posts a thread that has the slightest thing to do with Quebec, there's always a bunch of angry Canadians high-fiving each other on how "Quebec sucks!", "I hate those guys", "We kicked their ***" and now "Let's invade them" and "Quebec is ********".

It's sad really.

Of course it is sad, Quebec is a huge part of our Heritage and I for one get really sad when I hear the rest of Canada talk ish bout Quebec. At the same time, the province of Quebec is not very welcoming to outsiders either, then you also have the Bloq (I don't really even need to go into that). You don't speak French? HAH you are going to get a lot of snobby looks thrown your way in Quebec.

Anyways its a two way road

I had to bold part of this.

You think its only the "quebecois who are losing their cultural identity? PLEASE MAN, Canada in GENERAL is losing it. You can thank our super lax immigration laws for that too.

Within 20 or 30 years Canada won't be Canada anymore, there will be more immigrants living here then Canadian born families. You can see it on the streets walking around. Half of the time when I hear someone talking in the streets its either chinese, cantoneseor some middle east languagethey are speaking. English or French? HAH yeah right!

Restrictions on Language is not right. Here everything has to be in French. Of course I know that the majority of Quebec is French but forcing the language down us anglophones is not right. There is no freedom for english speaking Quebecers. I am a Quebecer and proud of it, but I am English. They force us to have french labels, french signs, french must be spoken at work, etc. And you francophones treat us anglos like crap here. I live is terrebonne quebec and am the only english speaking household in my neighborhood and I have to tell you, I sometimes feel like a jewish person living in Nazi germany. Any way back to the games.... Amazon is the way to go! and this will surely hurt quebec retail stores not help them!

yah, i think you know what I was getting at ? Or perhaps you don't and are one of those bleeding heart liberals who think our immigration laws are good and that immigration is a great thing for canada?

At least my ancestors have been here for hundreds of years. I'm talking bout the FOBs who can't speak a lick of english.

You know we have familes of immigrants over here who bring their old aging relatives over from wherever they are from just so they can tap into our free health care? Yes thats right, they get canadian citizenship then they go back living in their homeland until they get sick and come use the tax dollars that I PAY to get free health care.

That Li guy who cut off that kids head on the greyhound...He was let in by immigrations canada even though THE MAN WAS A SKIZOFRENIC 9sp?).

Canada won't be canada in 30 years. book it

Canada isn't suffering? We just had a middle eastern RCMP officer who was given permission to NOT wear the standard RCMP Hat with his uniform. Why? Well, it was because then he wouldnt be able to wear his TURBAN!!!! I don't really give a #### if its against your religion you are part of the ROYAL CANADIAN MOUNTED POLICE, wear the uniform PROPERLY.

thankfully we have an anglophone here who lives in Quebec supporting what I was saying!!!

The French sit there and complain that they are not being represented properly in Canada yet they go and toss their english speaking population under the bus.

KapG

There are specific instances where I can see Quebecois feeling baffled by the fact that their interlocutor doesn't speak French (coming back to it in a minute) but based on my personal experience (and I swear to God I'm not BS-ing you), I don't remember ever witnessing disgust in the face of a Quebecois when he/she was talking to non-francophone. Au contraire! The average Quebecois has basic knowledge of the english language and feels proud when he/she's understood by the english-speaking person in front of him/her. Never have I seen a Quebecois refuse to answer a question asked by an anglophone or lecture him/her on how he/she should be speaking French in Quebec. I'm not saying it never happened, of course. But I've lived all my 27 years in Quebec and I personally haven't seen anything like this.

The specific instances I was referring to are the following:

  • There are stores (at least in Montreal) which still only advertise in english, despite a 37 years old law forbidding it.
  • There are stores (again, at least in Montreal) where you can't be served in French because the employees are unilangual anglophones

Those are just unacceptable and I think (in those specific instances) it's only understandable that Quebecois voice their insatisfaction. But again, those are marginal cases. And concerning immigration, Quebec is just as welcoming as any other nation. The only thing the Quebecois nation is asking is that immigrants respect their fragile culture and their laws and that they learn French so that they can blend-in and contribute to the province's prosperity. Quebec offers plenty of tools (financiary and others) to facilitate immigrants' integration.

where's the source for this law? i want to see it, because as far as i know the only law we have was that they had to have french writing on it and a french manual. i'm a montrealer, my whole family is english, and the one thing i despise about quebec is the language police, where is the freedom for anyone if we're forced to do something (stores get it the worst). i'm all people speaking whatever language they want (heck my gandparents only speak italien), but don't stuff it down my throat. i speak french, i work with a lot of french people, and they're all really cool. the only people that care are those snobby french people, and that is why this law is in place.. it only takes 20% of people to complain
