Anyone know what the deuce is going on? My PS3 has been working fine last couple of days, i've played online, downloaded demos and it's been fine...turned it on today and it's decided that there's no ethernet cable detected. I've checked that it's connected properly, it is, i've tryed a different lead and it still doesn't work. I have the ethernet cable going into a router...all the other computers that the router is connected to is working fine, including my Xbox360.
I've tryed going to the network configuration but nothing happens, it's said 'Checking Network configuration' for the past 10 minutes now.
Anyone got any suggestions?

Tryed resetting the settings and it doesn't make a difference, also switched the cables round againin the router and still no change. It's weird 'cos it's only started doing  this today...worked fine yesterday and the day before :|

Sony techy support people couldn't figure out the problem...they said it's a very rare problem and the most likely scenario is that the ethernet port is broken and i should return it to the place i bought it. Rubbish.

Googling the error shows a few people have had it but i've yet to find a solution. The support people said it's a very rare problem...which i think is there way of saying they don't have a clue what's going on.
If anyone has a surefire way of fixing this it would be awesome. I'm on my last ditch attempt now before i take it back...i'm restoring it back to factory settings doing the full format which takes over 3 hours. So if this doesn't work i'm taking it back to Gamestation tomorrow.

Try the following things...i've tryed them all but none of them work...but here goes (theyre in no particular order, just different things you could try):

- Power down the PS3, Router and Modem...then reconnect them all in this order Modem>Router>PS3...giving each one time to sync up and stuff.

- Unplug the ethernet cable from the back of the PS3 and Router...and switch the ends around and try again.

- Set up all the settings manually i.e IP, DNS etc if you know them.

- Try a different ethernet cable.

They're all things the Sony tech support guy tryed with mine. None of them work, but you never know. I'm tryna use it wirelessly but am having no look getting my PS3 to find my imac as a wireless router.

I'll give that a try after if the formatting doesn't work.

Well, completely formatting the HDD didn't work...what a waste of 4 hours! Guess i'll just have to play Motorstorm or Resistance offline until tomorrow and see if it works when i get a new system.

I just talked with the service support and the only thing they could think of was that it is the router's fault. The told me to call my routher company and give them some numbers that they told me. They said that they already had few phone call with the same problem.

Quick way to find out whether or not it's your router...just bypass the router, plug an ethernet cable from your modem, directly to your PS3. That way you'll know whether it's the PS3 or your router.

Good news!! I took it to my neighbor and it works fine! No problems with the connection at all. I connected it at my place now and it still doesn't work. Maybe I will borrow his router to see if that's the problem or just something with the connection at my place. The good thing is that there is nothing wrong with the ps3!

okay so it is the router. I brought his and it was working at my place. That's weird because I tried the two routers that I have and it didn't work. They are pretty crappy so maybe that's why. I will talk tomorrow or on Tuesday with the guy that manages internet in my building and maybe he will be able to help me so I don't have to buy a new router.

Guessing we didn't have exactly the same problem then, 'cos it's definitely not my router. And i can't see why my modem would stop it from working when it's connected directly. Why does it have to be so difficult to get on the bloody internet! Just have to hope it works when i get a new one today!

no idea. I wonder if mine would be working if I would connect it straight to the modem. Let me know when you will try your new ps3.

There was definitely a problem with the other PS3. Just got a new one and it works fine...i looked at the ethernet port just now when the consoles turn on and there's a green light flashing next to it...the light was never on on the other console! The sony tech support guy did ask me if there was a light on!
So that's it, if anyone has the same problem as me, check for a light...no light...the ethernet port is probably broken.

Had exactly the same problem as you guys, but fortunatelly I followed these instructions and it worked !! "- Power down the PS3, Router and Modem...then reconnect them all in this order Modem>Router>PS3...giving each one time to sync up and stuff." ah, and the green light was flashing even with the PS3 not detecting the cable, meaning that the problem (amem for that !) was not with the port.

Damn, actually I was wrong, the problem was caused by some kind of "bad contact" between the port and the cable, I had to put more pressure in the port to make the PS3 detect my ethernet cable, now I have to be more careful while moving my PS3 to avoid this problem, the best solution in my case is buying another cable.

I was not receiving a link light, and thought that I must have a bad Ethernet NIC port on my PS3. With further investigation, I have determined that the (wired) Ethernet NIC on the PS3 seems not to be manufactured very well. There are some inconsistencies with the RJ45 modular (aka Ethernet) connectors between manufacturers, but for most networking equipment this doesn't present a problem. For the PS3 you must have a very good quality connector/cable. Specifically, at the very end of the connector there is a small plastic tab that sticks out from the rest of the connector. If this little tab is too long, it will prevent the RJ45 connector from properly seating/snapping into the PS3 Ethernet port. I had to search through my cables to find one where the manufacturer of the connector made this tab smaller/shorter than other manufacturers. Once I found the right cable, it snapped right into place and worked with no issues (like chris_novais mentioned above). I was about to ship my PS3 back to have Sony fix it. I am glad I investigated it further. I wonder how many returned boxes Sony receives and charges people $150 for that work with no issues providing you use a good cable.

I had this issue also. Seems its to do with cable length. I had my ps3 plugged into a 24 port GigE switch in the loft and had all of the above issues, very frustrating as I knew both bits of equipment used to work in their old configuration. Tested all lines and everything worked, tested other kit at ends of cables, everything worked, finally pluged in another 5 port switch next to ps3 and then ps3 into that switch with a short length of cat 5e and evrything is fine....don't get it as you are supposed to be able to run cat5e upto 384ft and my run is probably only 50 feet. Other interesting thing is my son has a Sony Bravia smart TV and that is probably half the distance away from the switch in the loft and that ports not picking the TV up either!!!....What have Sony done?

Hi, I have had this problem and just solved it. (Smug mode) I tried everything that was suggested but nothing worked. I then got cross and started pressing the cable in hard. When pressure downwards was applied on the back of the plug I got a green light. This meant that the gold connectors were forced up. To wedge the plug in I took apart a common or garden clothes peg. The first half I placed horizontally above the plug, leaving a slight gap. Then I slotted in the other half of the peg so that its wedge shape forced down the back of the plug. I have the old fat PS 3 and there is a handy ridge above the plug. It is now working. I have a much faster connection now. BBC i player works without buffering. If this works for you please send vast amounts of cash. Watch out for my next fix it - How to increase your hard drive capacity with an old baked bean tin. PS. The peg was the type with a spring in two pieces of plastic (Wood in old days)
