Have you ever quit playing a game because the story became too much? This just happened to me a few minutes ago. I was playing through Spec Ops The Line which I got off PS+ and I don't think I want to keep playing purely because of the story. I was actually having fun until I started seeing soldiers hanging by street lamps, bodies stacked up in tunnels, and the scene that really made got to me was when they killed the civilians with the mortors by accident. Its just depressing.

Have you ever played a game that really went over the top to make you quit playing?

your really missing out that game was amazing, the story writing was phenomenal, the part with the white phosphorus ahhh god i never felt such regret playing a game it and the ending is great. To answer your question no, a game never went over the top for me.

Does it keep getting more and more depressing, or was that the worse of it. If you feel the ending has a payoff worth the depressing story, I might give it a shot. I just saw that scene and turned off the game.

Oh god not this game...I hated every second I played this game. It's so cookie cutter from every third person shooter now. The "story" was lame as all hell. This game gets way too much praise for nothing. The story gets even darker to answer your question. I'd play it just to finish it and to see what the big fuss is about it but nothing else. Game was mediocre at best. If another game gets made sometime down the line (hehe...) I'll play it just to see if they actually improved. Honestly the best part of the game was hearing Nolan North's voice and the black dude from House Party as well.

I've heard that's kind of the point of Spec Ops. I should play that after I'm done with Vanquish.

Nah. If the story can suck me in and keep me stuck to my seat for hours, then thats fine by me. Games like Mass Effect, God of War, and Red Dead Redemption immediately come to mind. I'd rather play a game with alright gameplay and a great story (Spec Ops) than a game with amazing gameplay and a bad story (Call of Duty).

Xenosaga, there was just too much going on and the confusing names of characters, objects and locations didn't help.
A god damn space station named 'the song of Nephilim'? please...

I personally enjoy the type of games that go deep into their story. When it comes to RPGs, they are notorious for engaging the player to make them feel like they are actually the person in the game. The portion of the game you described sounds like one room in Dead Space. Now that game is sadistic, but enjoyable! Another game that goes deep into the store is Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. A lot of cinematics, story, etc. I suppose it's just how the player feels about the situation and doesn't put personal beliefs into the concept.

The only time a story can make me stop playing a game is when it starts taking over the game. I want to be in control, It bothers me when cutscenes or story elements get in the way of that.

You should read the actual book, it's even more twisted. That's the unforgiving truth of real war and worse. It's a good dark and mature story, I enjoyed it more then most current games. To answer the question, yeah. I did stopped playing some games because of their story, ffxiii comes to mind, after about 8 hours I couldn't take it anymore.. no offense to anyone that enjoyed it but I just couldn't tolerate the voice acting or absolutely confusing story I couldnt care for.

Honestly, Metal Gear Solid 4. Yeah, I know. It's cool to hate on this game but seriously, I just couldn't stand the story after a while. The gameplay is great but the cutscenes just draaaaaaaaaaag.

Eventually I just started skipping cutscenes because I didn't really care anymore.

Yeah, Spec Ops will just weigh you down more. There's a few possible endings, none of which are particularly happy, but if you feel it's too heavy so far, a few of them will leave you with a bad feeling.

You definitely should try it if you haven't gotten the chance. I absolutely loved it. The gameplay, itself, is ok; it's not going to be as fluid as Socom (just to reference a third-person shooter), but the story is the main attraction and is definitely worth playing through.

100% agree with FFXIII - sanctum fal'cie and l'cie and all that I couldn't follow it even with the codex explanation. I did like some of the characters though (basically Lightning and Sera). I feel like the writers had all of these amazing ideas in their heads but forgot to explain some key points. I had a friend who finished it explain it to me and the concepts were sort of cool, but not worth replaying to actually find out.

Final Fantasy XIII is a movie, thats been chopped into little pieces and has some gameplay wedged in between each cutscene. The gameplay and story don't even acknowledge eachothers existance, almost as if they were made by two different teams that didn't know they were contributing to the same project.

Eternal Sonata for me. I didn't like the story and was constantly forced to sit through really long cut scenes... I gave up after about 20 hours I think.

Never really gave up on a game because of its story, but Planescape: Torment had me taking long breaks from it due to all the excessive reading you have to go through.

You were painfully close to the ending then, depending on your pacing. You might want to reconsider beating that game, the ending is quite unique.

No, in fact I like darker storylines such as the one in Spec Ops. I thought it was a great game for that reason, despite otherwise being a generic shooter. I'll quit playing games due to frustration from time to time, but never will I quit because the story is too much. For me, the story can't be too much. Of course maybe I haven't played some of the "heaviest' stories out there, but I still doubt any would make me quit playing the game.

I knew going in that Special Ops borrows from Apocalypse Now (which in turn borrows from Heart of Darkness). Go ahead and google these if you have no idea what I'm talking about). Anyways, the short version is that neither of the above stories are feel-good stories...more like tragedies and rather like how, to quote Huck Finn; "Human beings can be awful cruel to one another". I would argue that it is one of the better stories out there.

I pretty much always see games through to the end even if I'm not enjoying it much, unless its so hard i can't beat it.

I did quit playing FF12 cus it was too long, i played for more then 50 hours and still hadn't reached the end and story wasn't really doing it for me.

no, i've never stopped playing a game because the story was too heavy. however, i have stopped playing games for story reasons. like i tried FFIX when it got a PSN release and there is just such a long stretch of being funneled along by the story (which i didn't care for to begin with) that i stopped playing. a big part of it was probably length. i don't care for heavy rain's story either, but i could at least finish the game because it's so short.

I can't say a that a heavy story has turned me off, but if I can't get into the story, I'm more likely to leave it unfinished. Resonance of Fate is the only game that comes to mind off the top of my head.

That sounds a bit extreme to me. If anything, disturbing content justified by a story only makes me more engrossed in a game. No images could put me off continuing a game.

Never happened to me so far, it's been the opposite that makes me quite a game or poor gameplay
