People really need to stop buying used PS3 from gamestop or anywhere else. I heard so many times that people temporarily fix YLOD on their PS3 and sells it to gamestop. I think people sell their PS3 because there is some problem. The difference in price between a used and new PS3 isn't that dramatic. It isn't like you are all saving $200. Get a newest, more energy efficient slim PS3 with WARRANTY. I really don't trust used game systems on ebay either.
And if my slim PS3 breaks, I won't be rushing out to buy another one. I scratch my head how some xbox 360 owners could be on their 3rd xbox 360 and they continue to buy them after they break. Bill Gates is loving it after each xbox 360 breaks and owners go out and buy another one. More money!
Sorry to say but buying a used ps3 is never a good idea. You don't know what has happened to it from the previous owner and stores like gamestop always lie to make a sale. It sucks that your ps3 broke.
At first, I was all like,"Well, I'm sure TC has a nice list of arguments as to why consumers can expect hardware failure after long periods of using the system due to a various number of conditions related to heat and wear after usage." But then I read that this system was bought used, and just shook my head.hazelnutmanUsed consoles rule.

Older consoles such as the PS2, SNES, and Dreamcast are fine to buy used, but buying a current-generation console used is always a major risk. As much as it disappoints me, we don't live in a happy world where everybody holds hands and watches Sesame Street together. Game consoles which are sold used are unlikely sold due to a lack of interest (which would otherwise be a valid excuse for older consoles), but rather the fact that there is something actually wrong with it. Therefore, buying a used console from this generation is an incredible risk. You could actually be buying a console which is being sold due to a lack of interest (which in that case, good for you), but for most PS3s on the second-hand market, I wouldn't even approach an offer.

QFT... Used consoles are rarely a good idea this gen.. I bought a used console from the store i work at (not gamestop or EB) but it was basically new and barely used (plus i already paid over 1k at launch) even Xbox sys and PS2s seem to be abnormally faulty for the used systems... Wii is probably the only system i would buy used this gen..
@hazelnutman: I should have been more clear actually, neither of my consoles are refurbs, they just have had previous owners. If your careful who you buy from you should be good, corse my Slim was 40 bucks, not much of a loss there if it did break :PJuggaloRandallOh yes, if you're buying from somebody you know or are careful of who it is, then the chances of you getting a faulty product dramatically decreases. I've actually bought an SNES, PS1, and PSP from various friends, and they all work great because I know they sold them to me honestly. I was referring to buying a used console from a second-hand game distributor such as GameStop or EB Games, which happened to be the case for TC.
If it didn't break when i dropped it from about a 1m height i don't think much will break it.

Physical abuse to the PS3 does very little damage. If you take it apart, every main component to it (motherboard, power unit, disc drive), are seperated, encased in layers of metal, and connected together only through various ribbon cables and whatnot. The worst you could do by dropping it is dislodging or misplacing an internal component, which can easily be fixed by readjusting parts.
The main cause of failure for PS3s is due to the slow build up of heat due to dust inside, eating away at any cooling systems such as fan functionality and gels on the CPU/GPU, which eventually breaks up the solder which holds the circuits in place. This is the main cause of the YLOD.
The constant usage of a component such as the disc drive may cause it to simply burn out, just like a light bulb, This is how disc read errors are formed.
So unless dropping it from a meter's distance can build up massive amounts of heat onto the GPU/CPU or even wear out the disc drive from usage, the physical rammifications of that kind of physical abuse has nothing to do with the most common problems experienced with the PS3, thus not granting your system any sort of immunity.
tl;dr: No.
i bought a refurbished ps3 from gamestop two years ago and mine is in perfect working condition. also, i purchased a two year warranty to start after sony's one year warranty (yes, because sony fixed it they gave it the original one year warranty) so i still have it for another year protected under warranty. man, i just typed warranty a lot!..........WARRANTY!
i dont expect my PS3 to break, its kept cool and i clean my house:P you on the other hand bought a used PS3 that was probably barely breathing when it was traded in. if you cant afford a new one, i'd advice just saving up...ya say you are poor, but in the long run you could end up wasting alot of money on used consoles that most likely were traded in because they had issues from abuse, poorly treated etc...
same reason i dont buy used guitar amps anymore, bought a used fender bandmaster from the 60s and i opened it up and it had been poorly modded and completely wrecked. just cant trust people now a days.
Never ever ever buy a used PS3, they are usually YLOD'd ones that have been reflowed and sold whilst the temp fix holds up... Never buy a used PS3 it's like ebay... i just won't trust buying anything with moving parts. I cannot believe people still buy used ones after a million people say the same
."Bought used ps3 and it broke HELP!!!"
.It's like no listens or bothers to even do a simple search on forums to see how other fared.
Well if you're poor and barely can afford the hardware, how do you plan on enjoying that hard earned console? You need an HDTV for starters, don't even consider playing ps3 on an SDTV, been there, done that...it blows. Also the games for ps3 aren't cheap either, where I live you can barely get a game under 25 EUR, and that's the really old ones. New games cost 60-70 EUR here, it's a good chunk outa everyone's wallet tbh...y ou all dont understand im poor its hard for me to get 10 15 maybe 20 dollars

Should've saved up more and bought a new one.Doolz2024Yep you should save and get a new one. GameStop sends all PS3s to a facility and most of them get opened and they end doing more harm than good to them.
Meh, Used Gamestop PS3s....not a surprise. My PS3 "broke" this week, but I got 2.5 years out of it, so i feel very satisfied with the entertainment I got out of it during that time. Besides its just the blu-ray drive that went out, so i think i can repair. In the meantime, I bought my first PS3 slim and absolutly love the upgrade.
[QUOTE="Diddies"]Used electronics are hardly ever the way to go.jdiamnz69
Ya they are. They save money, and 9/10 times they Work good. This guys just unfortunate.
I'm skeptical of a 90% success rate with anything purchased second hand, especially skeptical with electronics. But that's just me....i bought a ps3 used from gamestop and it took me nearly a year to save (im poor kinda) and it did not work so i returned it and the new one i got stop reading disc so that one did not work now they have no more in stock im disapointed

Two words. Buy new.
just because YOU bought a USED ps3 from GAMESTOP? LOL, my friend works at gamestop and he always tells me the lengths at which people go to sell them used consoles. they work for a week then break. I still have my launch ps3 console that i bought brand new, and it was dumb to spend 250 on a used one when 300 gets you a brand new one. sorry though.
thanks man i will buy a new one i just want to play so bad i love video games but never have a good console oh well if it takes another 6 months to raise 50 more dollars il do itjust because YOU bought a USED ps3 from GAMESTOP?
