external hardrive issues

I bought a 500GB internal hdd, and I bought an external 320GB to back up my data, I plug it in and it wont show up. I want to know if its faulty or if it is incompatible, or somthing else entirly. Its made by hp if that helps

Needs to be formatted to FAT32.

Download freeware-swissknife V.3 on your pc,plug in your external drive using a USB and format the drive to FAT32

this worked beautifully, I got my data backed up and new hdd installed thanks for the help guys.
