I want to get a bigger HD got my PS3, but do not want to ruin my warrenty, so I was thinking about getting an external hard drive. Would that work with the PS3?

No, the store warrenty will be void if I touch it. That is why I want an external one and yes that is cool of Sony to be so flexable with their system.

Then keep the original drive and if you ever have any problems put it back in before you return it.

Don't spend money on warranties. How many times have your electronics broken in a year. I mean, it's not like your PS3 is going to fall from some great height or something and you should have enough common sense to know that if you're paying $600 for a machine that Sony is taking a loss on, it has to pretty heavy duty. If you think you might need a warranty, don't buy the product in the first place. That's my philosophy.

Exactly, since there's no seal over the HDD slot, how will it void the warranty, manufacturers or store, if you swap drives? You can just put the old one back in in the unlikely case something happens and there will be no way for them to know.

I know that this isn't exactly what you are looking for but I have taken my 1 Gig Flash Drive and pluged it into the PS3 and I could pull any media I wanted off of it. I would just speculate that an external HDD drive will do the same thing. If I was you I would just keep all the songs, videos, and pictures on the external HDD and all your game stuff on the HDD that came with the PS3.

I am not guaranteeing any of that because I have only tried with a flash drive.

LOL Thank you!

Atleast you are all telling to just to put a new HDD in it. Wuld it not be easier just to plug in an external one, rather then take the HDD out just to put a new one in?

My plan is to take the games that use up the most space and put them on the external HDD. I was thinking of buying about 250gb HDD.

The PS3 come with a 1 year warranty already, why would you pay that much for a warranty the same length as you already had? Usually the point is to buy an extended warranty that is longer than the original. You got to be kidding me if $70 only go you a 1 year warranty.

I don't think you can use an external drive the same way as a internal drive. It would mainly read the drive and do photos and videos. But demos and game data I think are specific to the main drive that's on a faster connection than usb.

If you look in the PS3 manual it gives you instructions how to replace the drive. How can your wierd 1 year warranty for $70 be voided if you do something that's officially approved by Sony. That's almost like saying you void your warranty by playing the PS3.

If you really don't want to take the chance with installing a new internal Hard Disc Drive you can just go external. I use a external 8gb USB drive for my 360 and PS3 it's very small and compact. Just throw it into a USB port on any system and it's loads up just fine. Or you can just go to a Circuit City and pick up a external HDD case and HDD and go that direction.

Uh, the warranty from GS starts as soon as the warranty from Sony ends.
