So I recently got my PS3 and I wanted to contribute some processing time to the folding @ home project. I download and installed everything. After 15 minutes of folding, my system went from whisper quiet to super LOUD(think hand vacuum). So I got the hell out of folding@home and expected the fan to reduce speed, but it didn't. It stayed loud as hell. I had to restart the machine. My PS3 is well ventalated. It's on top of my desk and 4 inches away from the walls. Is this normal when using folding@home??

I wouldn't be that worried. Folding@home is a pretty complex program, takes even the highest-end computers a long time to fold a single work unit. I fold whenever I'm idle or in between games - I play music in the background. I've found the PS3 to be extremely reliable and not very vulnerable to overheating (knock on wood), but who knows, I could be wrong.

BTW, I looked at this thread because I misunderstood the title ha. When you said FAN I thought you meant fanboy - I thought someone went berserk and attacked someone or committed suicide while Folding@home on their PS3. I thought it was pretty funny :).

LOL I didn't see the title that way until you mentioned it. Yea I think I'm going to refrain from folding if it's going to put that kind of strain of my machine. I can stand SOME fan noise, but not if it's going to be hand vac loud.

LOL, I also thought you said a fan(person) of the PS3 went berserk when using Folding@HOME. I thought it was because he/she went nuts because you don't get anything out of it other than the satisfaction of helping others.

The fan does get signifigantly louder when folding, but the system won't overheat. If its the sound you're concerned with, then don't run F@H. If you can stand the sound/bandwith usage, then you can run it indefinately and the system won't heat up very much at all.

Doesn't it only use bandwidth for the 15 seconds it takes to up and down a new work unit?

It's typical, (at least I experianced it) what really helps is keeping the room temp. below 75 degrees F

The fan runs louder when folding because of how complex folding is, which is why it requires full use of your PS3. It's sucking up all the memory and processor resources, as it's basically 'growing' things via way way complex algorithms in a virtual world, that's taxing for any system.

fan reduces speed even when folding after some time (if room is quite cool) ; if you stop folding the fan MUST go down after some time (could be 20-30 minutes)
