Being a huge fan of the Friday the 13th's movie franchise, I've been looking forward to a "next"-gen slasher game forever, one based on the Friday the 13th movies. And about 10 minutes ago, I've come across this:

http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=44373&mode=thread&order=0

While it's not based on the popular franchise, it definitely looks Friday the 13th-ish. And personally, I think it's a very refreshing take on the horror game genre. The company's lead designer also talks about how present online capabilities are weighing in in the decision to pursue the development of the game that was first envisioned in 2003.

Halloween 2009 sure is a long wait and many thing can happen until then but damn am I excited about all this!

I like Friday the 13th. Jason Voorhees is hot when he has his mask on. I'd let him slay me anyday.

When his mask his off... not so much.

Seriously playing as a serial killer, thats even a step beyond Manhunt. I think they'd have a hard time releasing this one.

Well, like I said I know a lot of things can happen untill 2009, let alone Halloween 2009! I'm just saying that the news in question gets me very excited. The only thing that belongs to us in this story is hope and I'm very aware of that. Let's just see what happens!

So you're saying something like GTA, in which you can massacre hundreds of citizens/police officers in cold blood is just as or less bad? GTA has had no problem releasing (besides the usual controversy), so I expect this game to be no different. I mean, look at the HITMAN series, for god's sake!

You must follow gaming news since you're here. The title Manhunt 2 which is the closest game resembling this type of game was given an AO rating by the ESRB. Which means it cant be released on a Sony or Nintendo platform. Thats all Im saying. This game will get an AO too if they try to release it. I cant really say GTA is as violent as manhunt you never saw a guys head of with a wire in it. Hitman, whatever I dont rate the games. And another thing is the plotline 'play as a serial killer' Thats going to raise a lot of eyebrows.

I think that we're very lucky that none of the GTA games received an AO rating because to me, they certainly look AO quality.

The simple fact that Rockstar WANTED and INTENDED to make Manhunt 2 as violent and controversial as possible explains its AO rating. Thay basically asked for it.. and I understand completely. This game, on the other hand, if the development team doesn't have that same sinister intent, and makes a game with the same violence level as, lets say, Gears of War, it will land an M rating easy, regardless of "playing as a serial killer" Basically, what you're saying is this game and Manhunt 2 are one in the same, and that's completely inaccurate. We've seen basically nothing on this new game, so we can't judge it yet.

In games such as Hitman or even Assassin's Creed you play a serial killer of sorts, and those havn't had any trouble with controversy to the extent of an AO rating.

Alright now.. look at God of War/GoW2. If you're saying that blood and nudity will automatically earn a game an AO rating, you're mistaken. The GoW's had violence and nudity a-plenty, and easily gained its M rating. Like I said, Manhunt 2 was developed around the utmost amount of violence, so it basically asked for it rating.

That's the way I see it too! The serial killer background isn't enough to give the game an AO rating. And personally, even though I love violent videogames, I frankly don't need the game to be Manhunt 2-esque. Just give me a thrilling, gory, 17+ violence and I'll be happy.

Okay, so the developers at Rockstar "basically asked" for an adult only rating, then how I ask you can a development team claiming to make a game where you 'play as a serial killer' not do the same thing?

Well, just like -Ven- wrote, Hitman and Assassin's Creed both have you play as a serial killer! And neither have suffered the "AO treatment". It's all in what they want to make out of the game. Not in the protagonist's background only.

Just for the record an Assassin is technically a serial killer, but they do kill for purpose. A serial killer in the traditional sense is someone who kills on a whim a fancy, like the VTech guy or jack the Ripper there is somewhat of a difference,

Then what does that make of Carl Johnson, Tommy Vercetti, Niko Bellic and any other GTA protagonist of the sorts? I mean sure, they were on killing missions but they also could kill any innocent civillian as they pleased.

Thats true and I think the only reason they are rated M is because GTA has very cartoony looking graphics. From the 3 screen I see of this game seems like they're going for more of a realistic looking thing.

Last time I checked, an angelic assassin stabbing someone is just as violent as a masked psycho stabbing someone. Killing is killing, my friend..

Yep, I think the difference in GTA games and Manhunt games in the way they're shown. GTA has you just basically killing people like shooting them to death, shooting their heads off, kicking them when they're on the ground but these killings are played out in a cartoony way. (does someone's head really pop off like that?) Manhunt 2 is set in a dark atmosphere where you torcher people in the painfullest(sp) way possible.

The difference between Hitman and Manhunt games is in Hitman, you're basically the good guy and you're assassinating the baddies. In Manhunt, the purpose to all the killings is to make a movie or something. (is that right?) Well anyway it was some lame excuse to torcher people.

About this Campfire, it's hard to tell right now because we've only seen a few screenshots of the environment. Things aren't looking too good though because of the fact that we're supposed to be killing innocent people without a cause. :s

I just don't understand how Manhunt is so controversial, yet a movie such as Hostel or Saw isn't nearly as bad.

I agree though, if some guy goes off killing people because of a video game, he clearly already had problems before he played it.

i'm serious, thats one of the reasons i love oblivion so much, complete and total power to kill anyone you want, i mean don't get me wrong i'm not a death junkie or anything, but i just love snuffing out NPC in the most creative and gruesome ways possible. I just love the virtual superiority complex they instill upon you in games such as this.

Hmm you got a point. I admit killing an Imperial guard and a normal civilian. Afterwards, I had the civilian on top of the guard on top of the ocean and dragged his body back and forth so that it looked like, you know.. The sick part is when I dragged more NPCs into the action and boy did it look wrong.

But yeah, I can see where you're getting at. I hope this upcoming game will add more freedom as to how many ways to kill the NPC and my best part, what to do with them afterwards.

Ok I'm really starting to sound freaky now.
