I think it is GREAT NEWS that Sony has decided to drop the price of the PS3. Kind of...They dropped the price of the 60 GB PS3 down to $499. AMEN!

But then they did something REALLY STUPID and pooped (No, that's not a typo) out an 80 GB model with Motorstorm for $599...Maybe I missed something, but wasn't $499 supposed to be the breaking point for most consumers?

Now that Sony has done an admirable job at killing their momentum, I'd like to take a moment to discuss features that Sony COULD HAVE and SHOULD HAVE added to the 80 GB model...

1)PRE-INSTALLED YELLOWDOG LINUX!

Now wouldn't it be cool if you could take home your 80 GB PS3 bundle, plug in a wireless keyboard and mouse, and then boot up Linux? Wouldn't it be nice to browse the web with Mozilla Firefox, check your e-mail, and watch your illegally download AVI movies with MPlayer? Wouldn't that be great? Wouldn't that just ADD VALUE to your purchase? Hell...you can even type up papers and spreadsheets on your PS3. If you want, you can even run a Super Nintendo emulator on it!

You can install Linux on your PS3 if you want to. The only problem is, the average user will have no idea what the heck they're doing. I consider myself to be a pretty savvy tech guy, but even I ran into some problems. Sony touted Linux as a great additional feature of the PS3. How about they actually give it to us? Like right out of the box? Rather than making us users spend hours of our time researching and looking for ISO files around the internet?

Honestly, I think if Yellowdog Linux was pre-installed on the 80 GB model, it would be FANTASTIC! IT would display the versatility of the machine...Alas...that's not happening.

2) HDMI Cable and Headset

I'm sorry, but I have to say it. If Microsoft can add these things to their "Elite" system, then Sony should too. Granted, Microsoft put the lower quality HDMI 1.2 port in the Elite and the Xbox 360 only uses proprietary accessories...but who cares? The average consumer doesn't care one bit. What does matter is that after spending $599 plus tax, they still need to buy an HDMI cable or component cable AND a headset, if they don't already own one...That's the kind of thing that really pisses Santa off during the holiday season...

3) Coupon for a Free Blu-Ray Movie!

Yeah, yeah...I know there's an offer where you can get 5 free Blu-Ray movies when you buy a PS3. Here's the thing though...

I DON'T WANT 5 FREE CRAPPY BLU-RAY MOVIES.

I WANT A MOVIE. PREFERABLY A GOOD MOVIE. THAT ALSO HAPPENS TO BE ON BLU-RAY.

Seriously...if they gave me a copy of say...Casino Royale, Spiderman 3 (C'mon Sony...I know you can pull this one off), or 300 on Blu-Ray, you can bet I'll be inviting all my friends over to my house to gloat about how awesome my new PS3 is.

You think any of them are going to want to come over and watch Chicken Little or Stealth or Hart's War on Blu-Ray? C'mon Sony...if I show them "300" on Blu-Ray on my new 65" 1080p Bravia, maybe my friends might want a PS3 as well...maybe they'll also want a matching Sony Bravia HDTV...

4) WARHAWK

Forget about Motorstorm...Have Warhawk installed on every 80 GB PS3 (make sure you add a headset), sit back, and watch the Playstation Online Community blossom... There's no point even debating this because everyone knows I am right. Soon, dad is going to hog the PS3 to himself and will be forced to buy his son his own PS3...Isn't that what Sony wants to happen?

I bought a 60 GB PS3 for myself for Christmas last year. I absolutely love the machine to death. It is truly a beautiful piece of hardware with almost limitless potential. I highly reccomend it to ANYONE who likes video games or digital entertainment. The price drop is a GREAT IDEA! The addition of the 80 GB however, is not...Those are my 2 cents...
