Topic creator you read my mind (Edit: you liked the music...I despise the music more than you could imagine so I agree on the other stuff :P). Square really want those extra clams from US gamers....apparently they like linear RPGs with ultra simplistic gameplay.
Such a sad generation for me...two of my favorite series, Silent Hill and Final Fantasy are in big trouble it seems.
I'm about the same as you the battle system is getting interesting now, I still prefer the Final Fantasy VII system with the materia, I find the menu a little bit odd to control in FF13 I do like the game though, although I'm getting a little bit annoyed with everyone sounding as though there just about to have an orgasm.Once you get to Chapter 11, things get a LOT harder. There will be monsters that one shot you if ur not paying attention. The other Final Fantasy games i've played have been FF7, FF8, FFX, FF12. I can honestly say this is the hardest of the bunch.

Theres only 13 chapters though right?....so e have to wwait until like 90% through...for it to get tough...I played 3 hours last night...and was proper boredOnce you get to Chapter 11, things get a LOT harder. Same...
The characteres are godawful/terrible(WTF is that blue haired thing from NORA), and the story so far is dumb like never before. SARA! Ragnarock, We are heroes, focusbla bla bla...
I get the feeling that Square-Enix startes FFXIII and didnt know what to do with it, they made nice GFX but lost everything else.
Ok, i'll heal you then...
it is to be expected that one of the characters of the group will be annoying to someone, it's a JRPG afterall. For me it's Hope, mainly because the writing seems as confused about what they want to illustrate as he supposedly is. For you it's Snow, for others Vanille.
The easy fights, i 've played 3 hours so far and yes they are easier than expected, but since i read that this game goes up to 30-40 hours, you cannot expect them to throw at you difficult battles until the 10 hour mark, as this might turn several people away. There is about a hundred great games out thereready to provide a higher quotient of achievement, than any turn-based RPG.
About the plot, it is obscure at the beginning, especially if yourefused to read any spoilers like i did, but the stakes are high if you come to see yourself as a part of the group because as far as they know they are doomed and not know much about what to do about it. It's not such a bad beginning. For us!
Surly we can - FF7 battles within the first hour - was a decent enough boss that you could die on it! I literally spent 3 hours...walking down straght lines...press X for this useless auto battle thing - although there was little else to do as even using abilities...I had none...FF7 - you had attack and Bolt to start with - mixing it up a bit...similar with FF8...and FFX...etc They have a legacy to live up to - I am glad to see that people say it improves later on though - that I am excited about - but really thw whole game should be engaging - its a Final Fantasy! The easy fights, i 've played 3 hours so far and yes they are easier than expected, but since i read that this game goes up to 30-40 hours, you cannot expect them to throw at you difficult battles until the 10 hour mark, as this might turn several people away. its not that super easy, you can die even about 2.5 hours in if you're not careful. Most final fantasy games are completely 100 percent easy until 5 hours in. For instance, the first boss in 13 actually required some thinking, it was easy but you had to actually do something other than bash x.
Really, like what? Anyone who's played a JRPG should know that if a boss has two little things floating around him and are strikable.... those need to die first.its not that super easy, you can die even about 2.5 hours in if you're not careful. I'm on chapter 10... I just avoid random fights now since a) they are tedious and repetitive, and b) they are still so freaking easy (just longer than they should be)... I just get the feeling the combat system was built without this stagger stuff in mind and they added it in later on to draw out encounters. When I saw the Team Xbox review of 5, I thought how could they be serious? But lo and behold I find myself tending to agree.
I'm yet to encounter a single boss that mad me think omfg I'm screwed (I still remember the trouble I had with Seymour on Gagazet)...not only that, since there is no fear of your opponent, there's no sense of victory. You just feel like you've completed and obligatory piece of the story and move on to the next linear corridor.
I keep playing it because there have been some incredible games in the Final Fantasy series and I owe it that much, but it'll take something special for me to think of this series in the same light again after this.

Yes, and if you go 10 more years back... platform games such as Mario might have required you to spend 3 hours on a perfectly executed triple jump on the very first level. I had played FF7 back then but it was not that much more difficult at the beginning.[QUOTE="kevy619"]Really, like what? I would give an 8.5 The game does not deserve a 5 out of 10, and it also does not deserve a 50 out of 100I'm on chapter 10... I think the reason some people say it's hard, and some say it's easy, is for two reasons. Experience playing Final Fantasy games (in general) Experience points of Final Fantasy game characters (Final Fantasy XIII, battle and upgrade system). The game starts off pretty easy but as time goes on, if you're not upgraded it will take like a year to kill a regular appearing foe. The enemy are very strong as a matter of fact. It's just how you're playing the game.GalufUndiesYeah, I can see that. I've been killing everything I see, and everytime I turn the game back on I'll backtrack as far as it will allow me to and kill em all again. I know from experience with the franchise to get as much XP as possible as early as possible. I've been finishing out each of my Crystariums before the next level even becomes available. I'm one step ahead of everything I've come in contact with so far. I plan on staying that way.
You do notice that in Final Fantasy games when your killed during a boss battle time, after time, after time, you gotta go and level up your characters and their weapons and etc. That's like the #1 rule in all RPG's!!!email2003i never do that, my play style is a bit different for my first playthrough in any rpg's. i prefer to beat the game without grinding, for the challenge i suppose. if a boss is hard, theres always a way to work around it... now when i get to new game+ or second playthrough i max everything out.

lol seriously ... i do kill everything and level and stuff ... but hell backtracking to overboost your characters ...
it's like waiting to be level 99 before leaving midgar in ff7. It kind of overcomes the purpose of fighting imo ... on the other hand i heard someone say once ... only fights you know you'll win.
i had to retry both eidolon fights ... my fighting style in rpgs is usually en endurance fight cause i don't powerlevel, so i usually buy a ton of mana hp items and plans heals accordingly.
I also like to have time to think my movves over, i'm a chess player type of gamer.
I fumbled bigtime on a fight in the wasteland too. got blown to bits by 3 bombs o_O. decided to equip ember rings afterwards o_O
And i don't consider myself a bad player (i did after all plat demon's soul wich is considered by some to be kinda hard).
My petpeeves with this game:
buying components gives no indication as to about how many you for an upgrade, same goes when upgrading getting at least a small affinity indicator between component and equipment would've been nice.
choosing a slower atb in the settings doesn't ajust the time requirement for star so i felt kinda obligated to stay with the faster one. I mean why give me the choice if your gonna scre.w me over for choosing o_O.
no indication as to what role lvl actually levels o_O.
the game is good so far, the story is still a bit complicated for me, I just wish theres an option to make the camera keep still during battlesjohnlennon28LOL yeah, it adds a new depth to the game. Strangely enough, as a tactical disadvantage it gives you an advantage to plan ahead and narrow your focus elementary. I don't see the really big deal, having them stationary, not able to move is no different than final fantasy 1-10. The cameras are kind of annoying but I think if you press down your analog stick the camera changes angles.
FFXIII is great! I have loved every minute of it so far. I haven't been able to play too much though, only 5 hours in. I don't find it a problem, but I can see the linearity upsetting people due to the "tradition" and the expectations that SE has built for itself with FF games. But I guess everyone has their preferences. When I think about linearity and this game, I find that it makes sense. If you were trying to save someone you loved, would you mess around in some random town and talk to some random person sitting in an alley? I feel these characters have goals and the game makes you accomplish these goals. It is kinda hard to believe when you are trying to save the world that you can visit every town and talk to every random person about the weather. But of course it is just a game. :?
Anyways, hope you have fun or find the fun in this game!

I'm about 12 hours in and the battles aren't easy to the point of boredom anymore(If you relax to much you'll die, alas just hit retry and no harm is done(-_-)). However, what I liked most about final fantasy(game play wise) was the ability to grind my self into God. I'm always just strong enough in this game and I don't like it. The pace of the beginning is horrid I don't think I can see myself replaying this one. Overall this game is fun, the music is good, the characters are likable, Vanille is fine if you're into anime(love hina anyone?), the battles are fun, its not too hard. However, this game has one huge flaw... It's just not Final Fantasy. Had this rpg been called anything else (fal'cie chronicles) no one would have a problem with it. But(and a big but) having the name final fantasy, it creates large expectations and this just lacks the soul of the ff game. As I'm wondering down the winding paths fighting seemingly useless fight after fight I feel no real motive to be doing what I'm dong... No real connection and if it wasn't for Sazh's pet chocobo popping up I'd have forgotten its a FF game. Please Log In to post.
