The setting is completely new for FFXIII....
The characters are completely new for FFXIII....
The gameplay should be relatively new for FFXIII....
you should be fine!
does anyone know if FFXIII will have the same universe as seen in some other of Square's games? for example... FFXII was in the same world as the FFT games. i was wondering if FFXIII was in the same situation.c0mplex
I haven't read anything about that. It seems its going to be a new universe.
There is no need to play any of them before 13. If you decide you wanted to though I would only recommend playing through FF4,FF6,FF7,FF8, and FF10.
FF7,FF8,and FF10 i HIGHLY recommend. They are my all time favorites storywise and gameplay wise. Alot of people tend to like 4 and 6 a great deal as well, but I prefer the 3D art style. I would say 7 has the best story ever though, with 10 being the next best.
FF12 was a complete waste of money, the game was absolute garbage; DO NOT bother getting it.
If you don't, you are going to be so lost. lollextexrex
Im sorry but everyone disagrees, and I think I'm gonna go with them. sorry

but definately pick up 10
Ive played FF3 but never beat Kefka, I was thinking maybe I should play them all before 13?FreewayScruff
FFIX and X for the best FF experience. XII is a fail and FFVII was only for those who played the game back then. You won't see the big deal if you play it now.

The set of games that is set in the FFXII universeare called "The Ivalice Alliance" or something like that. FF XIII will be set in a new universe but there will be other games set in that universe. Those games have not been released yet. They include FF XIII, FF XIII Versus and I think there's another one that i forgot the name of. All the games set in this new universe are part of the "Fabula Nova Crystallis" series.
did people not like XII that much? i thought the game was excellent (aside from certain art directions; cough*Vaan*cough).c0mplex

Fixed. Why play an RPG if your characters don't mean a thing until the VERY end of the game? And when I mean that, there isn't even character development...you know, RPG fundementals?

the character achitypes were interesting enough to care about what happened to them throughout the story. the real focus of the story was Ivalice itself and its varying sects. it was cool to start in a normal civilized town and seeing how one population dealt with a war, then going to other populations like the Garif and Viera to learn how their customs shaped how they felt about the war.
YES. And in order. Also don't forget FFX2 and tactics. Maybe FFCC as well.
Actually there is no real reason to play any FF game to get into it because they mostly have no storyline tie in and very different gameplay styles.
Having said that though, they are fun, and as a fan of the series I would see no reason not to if given the opportunity.
Ive played FF3 but never beat Kefka, I was thinking maybe I should play them all before 13?fs_metaloYou should play FFI, IV, V, VI, IX, XII and Tactics just because they are all amazing games
Everything you said is void when you excluded X and included XII. Pfft. Depressing.

Really? Because I seem to remember nothing that wasn't cliched', happening to them...wait, except the final boss. He's the only one that died. -_-
And their awesome Dr. Cid. They should've made HIM the final boss. Along with make the characters more into the story instead of looking like they're just passing through. Even with a princess it seemed like it.
Amen to that. Sure, the combat system is nice. BUT! They make it so it takes so fricken long to level up in ff12 more than any other final fantasy game. And the english voices sound like they're coming out a cup. Bad compression probably. Graphics are also so jaggy, and with that sound, it seriously gave me a headache for hours the first time I played it. They tried pushing large environments, which really messed the graphics up big time.
You'll be fine as long as you know how to play a traditional rpg. But I do reccomend ff6-10. 6 is a bit old, but its really good. But 7-9 may be hard to find these days.
Play all the FF's on SNES (Mystic Quest and V excluded) and play FFVII on PSX. After that you're not missing out on much. Everybody seems to think X is some gem...have you guys played it? I know it was the first FF for PS2 and it looked great, etc. But seriously, go back and replay it. It's not good. VIII could've been better without the flawwed leveling system. I haven't played too far into IX because I got bored rather quickly but, many people swear by it so it could be really good. XI is online and most people say it's not that great so you're not missing anything there. XII could be good but I didn't like the battle system so, try that one for yourself and see.
As for FFXIII, I'm looking forward to it but I've learned to be skeptical with FF now. I'll definitely rent it first. If it doesn't suck me in in a rental period, I won't be buying it. Some people say I don't give RPGs enough of a chance. I usually play RPG's for at least 10-15 hours before deciding!!! If it doesn't get better in 10-15 hours, then it's not worth it IMO.

I don't like RPGs :)

How do you stare dead into FFXIII's trailer and say that?
I repeat, Me no likes RPGsI'm shocked and appauled

Get out of here. That's just being an old-school lover to the extreme. While that may be good, it fails when you can't like the newer ones.
FFX IS a gem. I dont quite know how you can call FFX not good without calling VII the same thing...
FF12 was a complete waste of money, the game was absolute garbage; DO NOT bother getting it.

FFXII was actually really good in my opinion. I didn't dislike Vaan, I just hated the person who did his voice acting. Also, Balthier is probably one of the top 3 coolest FF characters out of all of them. I've noticed a lot of people saying they don't like XII only mention when asked which FF they like say VII and X. Sure, those games are great and two of the best, but VI is better than both, in my opinion.
The story in XII is great, you can't say they didn't develop the characters, because they most certainly did. The thing most people don't see is that they didn't have a main character, so it seems like they were ALL underdeveloped, because one wasn't completely concentrated on. The story was about the conflicts of Ivalice, with 6 main characters. Also, as has been said, the battle system was great and I hope XIII uses something at least similar.
Anyway, it's all opinion. I've enjoyed FF 4-12 (minus XI, I love MMOs but really hated XI) along with FFT (which I think has the best story of all FFs).
As for the thread topic, no, you don't need to have played any other FF to understand XIII. The only thing you will miss on is things like Moogles, Chocobos, the various summons and Cid (different character in every game, but always has an important role. There is Wedge and Biggs as well, but they are never major characters). You don't need to know what those mean or anything, but just that those are the staple characters in the FF universe that happen to be in every game.
Oh, and btw, I actually liked the different moogle look in FFXII, but they were so cute I wanted to rip them in half for making me question my masculinity.
Really? Because I seem to remember nothing that wasn't cliched', happening to them...wait, except the final boss. He's the only one that died. -_-

are cliche's such a bad thing? Uncharted is drenched in prior adventure story ideas, yet i and a lot of other forumers really enjoyed the story. its exactly how i feel about XII.
*** SPOILER (CAN'T SEEM TO GET THE TAG TO WORK) ***
plot ideas like Vossler's betrayal (and justification) and the struggle between the House of Solidor and the Senate are definitely not new creations in story telling
*** SPOILER END ***
but the actions of all the characters root back to how they are reacting to a very large war, and what the consequences are to their actions. in video games today where large scale battles are seen as epic and glorious, it was a cool change to have a story where the main characters' actions are motivated by avoiding war (ironically though... by fighting everything in their path).

No, I don't think any of them take place in the same universes as one another, with the exception being FF X-2. I don't believe XII took place in the same world as FFT, they just had the same name. From what I understand, XIII and versusXIII both take place in the same universe but are completely different and unrelated storylines, but that may even be untrue.

MyzeDivine
I think many FF players disliked it because it didn't have a whole lot in common with the rest - it didn't feel like a Final Fantasy because the plot seemed a lot less...hero has been born and must save the world in this wonderful mythological world, and a lot more political scheme. I think, that essence of the setting and story, was a much bigger aspect in people disliking it than the new battle system.
I will be honest, it took me a while to accept this new type of world, but once I did, I enjoyed the political plot.

I am currently enjoying 12. What do you guys not like about it??
No need really. They have no relation storywise. If you still want to play old ff i recommend FF3, FF7 and FF9psyum
and ffx
and FFVIII, i dont understand why this game is so overlooked but people will recommend the crappiest FF, which is FFIX. FFVIII is the one most similar to FFXIII from the looks of it anyway, since it the most futuristic.

I totally agree, what i really hate about XII though are the damn enemies! If i wanted an MMO i would go and play one, i dont need ultra slow leveling, uber strong monsters (in some areas), and an underdeveloped license grid! The grids highest HP upgrade was only 500! That is what i really hate about it.
FF12 was a complete waste of money, the game was absolute garbage; DO NOT bother getting it.

agreed. boring story, boring characters, boring conversations between characters, no memorable music like previous FF's, etc.
I haven't played all of them but I'd recommend FFV (Advance on DS, best version out there), FFVII, FIX (personal favorite) and FFX.
