Has anyone read the recent article on IGN regarding FFXIII?
Did anyone else get a sick feeling in their stomach afer reading it? I did.

After reading it I realized that FF is as I've grown to love it is now beyond dead. I got to be honest and say I haven't REALLY enjoyed a FF since FFVIII.
And IX was the last one I liked. FFX was a step in a really scary, underdeveloped direction. XI doesn't really have a place as a #'d FF (though I was into it for awhile). And XII was just a slightly beefier X, but still not the direction I was hoping the franchise was headed.

I could write volumes about this (and I might go start a blog here right now), but I will end with this question for you to ponder:

Has Final Fantasy as a franchise gone in the direction you've hoped it would?
And btw, what was your first FF game? That tells me where you're coming from in regards to answering the above question.

I think the games are branching out more and each one is unqiue. You don't know how the gameplay and story is going to play out now. In th old FF you had a hero-villian-turned based strategy. Now it's kinda mish-mash hero/villians and the gameplay varies. So i think it's more diverse now.

sounds like to me they can never settle on a solid idea, so they take the easy road and say it was design choice.

There a plenty of JRPG's out there doing everything FFXIII isn't. If lost Odyssey can do a proper JRPG then Square shouldn't have a problem. lost Odyssey (and other JRPG's) has more content than FFXIII could ever dream of. There is no reason to cut simple game content in favor of a streamlined story. Im sure FFXIII will be a good game but they have to stop bulls******* and say they designed FFXIII to be as casual as possible.

If you mean the main games then I believe quality have been relatively consistent. I wish they go back to the battle system of 1-10, 12 was well decent, but when I want to play a game I want to control all the characters and direct control not through gambits and such. FFX had probably my favorite story and the battle system was lovely. not sure what you hated but I thought it was beyond excellent. I've been reading versus 13 is supposed to be a bit more old school FF though. for the other parts of the FF name, tactics was the only one I enjoyed tacticts advanced 1 and 2 both we standard to poor. the first crystal chronicles was nice, the DS ones were decent, but honestly I wish they stop making them and focus on the main games. dirge of cerebus was fun and nice to play, haven't gotten to crisis core. So I wouldn't say they've been going down or up, it's more going steady which sadly you didn't put a choice for. FF has never settled on a solid idea, but that's part of what I love about it. the overdrive system changes from game to game a bit, the magic system changes immensely, the ATB system was always getting more active(FFXII took it to the extreme though) and even leveling changes a bit for game to game. Yes they don't have as much content as some games, but the story are great and the content is usually more than enough. also Final Fantasy games had always had huge amounts of replayability. I just got done beating 2 again, beat 5 and 6 recently. Got a hold of FFX international so I replayed FFX and I enjoy every moment of each of them.

For not-so-old fans like me, it goes to wrong direction. Not as enjoyable as 7, 8 and 9. What I don't like:

  • MMO style influence and all those gambit-like thing
  • Inferior dungeon and map design except 12
  • Superb graphic and cinematic but not accompanied with equal feature

My first Final Fantasy game, technically, was Final Fantasy VII. (Shocker!) My first game I invested in was Final Fantasy IX. Hate aside, FFX was great to experience for millions. Shame that the thousands that didn't like it didn't feel the same way. When Enix decided to forget the plot in XII, as well as choose cash over top tier quality with XIII, they lost their edge. This is the perfect time for companies to step up and replace the king of JRPGs. (That means step up the quality.)

"In order to allow the player to become absorbed in the drama of the storytelling and the new and exciting world of Cocoon and be drawn to the characters without getting distracted or lost we have deliberately used a linear game design for the introduction sections so they can be enjoyed in the same manner as watching a film." Enix
Bull. It was disc space and $$$ that kept things narrower than Final Fantasy X. Bullet #4

12 however just felt... so weird... 13 looks like its gonna bring my hopes back up except for the super linear gameplay everyone is talking baout kinda blows, i wanted to explore this whole world of pulse :/

First played FFVII but I've played the earlier ones as well. My favorite is FFVI (only just started FFVIII and haven't played FFIX yet).

I quite enjoyed FFX (not realising that it was the start of a downward spiral). I didn't like the implementation of the airship but everythingelse was ok.

FFX-2 had a good job system but I was really disappointedto be visiting the same locations, didn't like the game being divided into chapters and started feeling that some of the game was written in such a way to increase the sale of guides ( there was an item which counted as part of the percentage score that you couldn't get if you talked to someone).

I've played FFXII twice, didn't like random chests or the way you could miss out on the Zodiac Spear if you opened one of four chests. On both playthroughs I got as far as the Yiazmat battle and just gave up due to lack of interest.

FFXIII will be the first FF for a long while that I'm not buying on the day of release (is it really only 2 weeks away). I'll probably wait until I see it second hand because I'm not enthusiastic about the way Wada has been treating the PS3 fans.

Well, depending on how FFvs13 does sales wise, you may not have to worry about this any more. I'm thinking whichever game does better is the direction that S_E intends to take the series as a whole. And given the Kingdom Hearts popularity in America and the FF popularity in Japan, I could see vs13 kicking the snot out of 13.

I do still agre with you though TC. Ever since FF has gotten rid of the overworld for a more corridor based map, it's gotten quite stale. But I also firmly believe that the Final Fantasy series has been the casual JRPG since it's inception. Mos hardcore JRPG fans will tell you that FF is mediocre at best.

Glad someone else didn't turn a blind eye to Wada's decisions.

I say that with every new final fantasy that comes out the developers show just what the said system is capable of doing when you push it to its limits.

I disagree. FFX was a great experience, and there was little exploration available. While there was an overworld map in that game, you were limited to the defined towns/areas.

my 2 cents

ff1,2,4,6,7 were all awesome games
3,5,8,9 were good games
10 and 12 were good games, but they weren't final fantasy games.... sticking a labels that says peaches on a can of beans doesn't magically change the contents of the can into peaches.

Ever since they took away complete turn based battes and random encounters (I actually liked those), I haven't really liked the games. I probably wont get this one and will wait for versus. I also don't like linear games. My first one I played was 6 but I finally got a copy of 4 aka 2 a couple years ago. I still like 10 the best with 7 a close second.

same here. 10 and 12 were awful. i never played 11. judging by the last 2 games and the reviews for the new game, ff13 will be awful as well. final fantasy has definitely headed in the wrong direction.
