3 Basics you must master to become a decent FIFA player. A.) Learn how to cross, and when to do it. There's three different types, so master all three. B.) Learn how to shoot. If you don't score, the best you can do is draw. You only want to strike it when defenders are near, finese on breaks, and if you are on a break and the goalie runs at you learn how to lob shot. C.) Learn your team/teams. What I mean is the formations they give you and the starting 11 may not compliment your playing style. Also, this isn't Madden, you don't want every player to have incredible speed rather then other abilities like crossing, dribbling, aggressiveness, heading, long shots, finishing, etc... etc... If you don't know how to break out or your style of play tends to not allow that to happen, you want crossers, long shooters, headers, and long passing skills over speed, finishing, dribbling and acceleration. Vise versa if you like to break out with your players. Depends on how you play. Last thing on this category, know each players weak foot! Constantly using a players weak foot to do everything, will make a good player look and play bad.

playing: don't sprint all the time, use L2 for more ball control and precision in passing, lobbing and shooting, while shooting, use R1 for a lob-shot over the goalie, or L1 for a controlled shot with the inside of your player's foot (or outside depending on your situation)... right analog stick is your friend, do not make it your enemy by using it too much disrupting your sprint - run flow... the players do have a certain weight and abilities, try to use it against your opponent while dribbling, tackling or lobs, if you catch your opponent on its wrong feet you can just run by without losing the ball... and as everyone else mentioned, practice... tactics: create a custom tactic matching your playing style, if you feel like your defenders are all over the place but not where they supposed to be, turn down aggression and pressure, maybe a more contained defense like area defense is your cup of tea (mine is)... with a good custom tactic matching your needs you'll have much better chances... formation: what i have written about tactics is the same for creating a formation, not every default formation will suit your style, so play with different formations... i know it is just a game but f you spend sometime for its preparation it becomes a much more rewarding experience... :) oh, and yes, practice... :P
