Ok, so I've read that this new firmware update has some nasty little anti-hacker/anti-pirate features embedded in it.

First of all, apparently it's bricking a lot of manually upgraded hard drives, and even some factory drives.

Secondly, there is a clause in the license agreement that authorizes Sony to log on to your PS3 remotely, even when it isn't on, and scan your PS3 for pirated or illegal material.....yeah, pretty messed up. There has also been talk that they can scan your network for machines with illegal materials on them. That isn't known for sure, but the fact that they can access your PS3 is.

Part 2 of the update is supposed to be released today, it's supposed to fix the hdd borking, but who knows.

Anyways, what are your thoughts on this, and have any of you experienced these problems so far?

I have no problem with them locking out the consoles with unofficial software on them, if it's messing up good users too that sucks. There's no way they are going to scan other computers on your home network though; not after the anti piracy stuff they got in trouble with on the pc a few years ago. I'm not sure how a rumor like that could get started.

why is it "pretty messed up" for them to log into your ps3 remotely? if you have no pirated material on your ps3 then you should have nothing to worry about. its only messed up for the ones that do illegal things.

That's the problem. Where does Sony draw the line at "illegal"? Are we allowed Homebrew? Are we allowed Custom Firmware? I can understand, and fully support them bricking consoles with backup mangers installed and run. But to brick the people who simply want to get more out of their console is just wrong.

Sony=PrivecyRapist lol. While im not overly commfy that they might be able to snoop around in my ps3 i can live with it, if it helps put the screws to pirates/hackers and cheats but noseing around in my PC is a no no. To much privet info ect on peoples PC's. going in to some ones PC is equal to breaking in to there house or car and digging around imo.

yeah only ppl who uses CFW or any kind of unauthorized softwares complain about it.

Of course they always claim they only use it for back up games and unlocking some features in PS3. lol

I never understood that. Why do you need to back up bluray games when the discs are darn near unscratchable unless you take your games out on the sidewalk and use hem as skates. It is just another hacker/cheater excuse. The only people complaining about this are people doing things they shouldn't be doing.

Wasn't it just a rumor? Anyway, I don't know what to think about it. I have nothing to hide, they can scan me all they want, but I don't like the idea of them having the possibility to fully control my system :S In the end I have firewalls on my Routers and Pcs to stop others to enter my network and now is Sony opening another way to access my network ... I don't like the idea of somebody who knows how to use this function to use my PS3 to attack my network :S

I'm sure the bit about them accessing peoples computers is BS put about by the hackers. I welcome this and hope it catches out a few leeches that refuse to pay for things like the rest of us. the scummy excuses they come up with validate whats happened with the ps3 is rediculous to be honest. they spout off about homebrew but the actual amount of homebrew that seems to be in development pales in comparision to the frantic work on "backup" managers etc.

maybe you should just use a pc. I am a ps3 owner and theres not much you can get out of it other than gaming and blurays compared to the pcs plethora of homebrew emulator and all types of bootleg games

They can scan all they like i have nothing to hide... Infact yeah go on Sony you should be able to find these pesky hackers who have this little backdoor missing as obviously you wont be able to connect so does this mean Sony can find hacked ps3 using their servers even if they have Custom Firmware with the little critter removed? Hope so, be a lovely way to crack down on the erm... cheapskates.

I don't see why it matters if they serch your ps3 or not. If you didn't do anything you have nothing to hide and I really don't think there is much to hide on the ps3. Id rather they take out the people who hacks and mod there ps3 than allow ps3 to be overrun with hackers and everything

You know what sucks? The Fact that all these firmware updates are doing nothing but trying to battle the piece of !@#*# hackers instead of making a firmware that actually improves the console.
