First off, I don't intend to offend anyone. Secondly, I've been a Gamespot member since 2003, but I hardly ever post. Maybe I'm from the video game golden era or something, but things just don't seem right anymore. I grew up playing classic NES action/adventure/rpg games: Rygar, Metal Gear, Goonies 2, Zelda, Metroid, Bionic Commando, Sonic, almost every game you can mention from Castlevania to Super Mario Bros. I had all the systems, NES, SNES & Genesis. Great games are great games, no matter what system they're on. Why is it that almost every other game has to be a first person shooter nowadays? I think the genre is good, but personally I've never taken a liking to them. Back in the days since Operation Wolf, FPS's were never my cup of tea. I'm not knocking FPS's, I just wanna know where are the good 'ol adventure games hiding at? There are plenty of AAA FPS's out there, don't get me wrong. I think developers should look back to the 8-bit & 16-bit libraries to see why the industry is as large as it is now. I speak as an adult gamer/consumer, I just want good games. I'm very tired of stuff that looks extra pretty, but plays extra ugly. They've become too pre-occupied in worrying how games look, instead of they play. Or as the case with the oversaturated FPS genre, developers put out a game that's very successful & they flood the market with reiterations of the same style of game. Damn near every coming soon hyped, anticipated game is a FPS. Like I said from the start, I mean FPS fans no harm. FPS's have actually grown on me a little bit, but still, I wish they'd stop forcing them on us. Give us a little more diversity, like we used to have it. 1

One good fps a year is good enough. I agree Fps have ruined gaming. Its all the same, point at enemy click button repeat 100000000 times. Thats it. Great games are games like Zelda, DMC, Metal Gear. While these games are still out there , there needs to be more like them.

I think that the only great part about an FPS game is the replay value due to multiplayer. Most of the time, the SP in FPS games really lack in story, character development, etc. Don't get me wrong, it's fun playing FPS, but I love my RPG's and action adventure titles so much more. :D

Ya it seems there are alot of FPS lately, and some are just generic, but there are some different games, with different stories, like Resistance or The Darkness. And there are some new games coming soon hopefully, LAIR, Uncharted, and others

Agree'd, too many F***ing games involving gunsin the same basic idea. really the NES and PS1&2 brought so many non-shooters along with them. i don't know why so many ppl love the same boring overdone idea. i couldn't care less about all the re-vised ideas of the FPS calling it "innovative" its still an fps.

Yeah they are flooding the gaming market and it's getting rediculous... Theres no variety in game genres anymore, lets see...

0 Survival Horror games :|

4 platformers, 2 Stealth games worth playing(MGS and SC) :|

1 rail shooter(light gun game) :| 0 point n click adventure games :|

quite a lot of rpgs but most of them suck now days,

puzzle games you mainly see on handles or the wii,

a few flying shooter games(few on the wii, 2 on the PS3, not sure about 360)

Forza 2 and GT are the only upcoming racers that I can think of that a remotely fun...

4 fighter games Tekkan 6, SSBB, Virtua fighter(which sucks)

AND A BAZILLION FIRST PERSON SHOOTER GAMES.

Keeping in mind I mean games that don't suck and are worth playing :P So yeah it's pretty pathetic :|

This post is silly. These number's aren't correct at all, and is a complete exaggeration of the situation.

Survival Horror, like resident evil or silent hill? quite a lot of rpg but most of them suck these days? Well, oblivion disagrees.

Actually, I don't even feel like arguing. Your post is just so dumb.

Resident evil has strayed away from being a survival horror game now, it's more like a third person shooter now... Silent hill 5 hasn't even been announced.. Yes oblivion is a good rpg but it plays very much like a first person shooter and it's only 1 game, if you compare that to how many great FPSs there are... and I was only being brief with that post, it was not ment to be accurate. But my point is there are a turd load more FPSs and TPSs than there is any other genre out there.

well you see, theres a demand for them.

casual gamers are very big on three genres: sports, racing, and first person shooters. not that theres anything wrong with that.

companies that want to make a lot of money are therefore best off making one or all of these games (EA).

its true that these genres were not big in classic gaming (except sports), but that was mainly due to system limitations.

by the way, there were more systems than the NES, SNES, and Genesis, such as the TurboGrafx16, Sega Master System, and Neo Geo, so don't act like you "played it all."

don't get me wrong i don't hate fps, but i gotta agree with you guys, there are 2 many fps these days and shooters as a whole. i play to relax. fps are more for people who spend all day at home. wasting the day thinking that theyre better then someone because they pressed buttons in the best sequence. i need variety i like different genres. and different games. well at least mgs4,dmc4,&FFXIII are on the way.

Personally I like first person perspective games. This perspective gives you the most immersive experience. Getting to see the world from eye level. I think that developers develop the types of games they most enjoy playing. One thing you'll never complain about in a FP game is the camera.

not true. you have to look better. there are almost NO fps games on Wii. there are also many other games on 360 and PS3. the question is: are you ready for new games? cause Wii has them.

i agree that the quality level could be a lot better, but games like elebits, cooking mama, wii sports, etc. etc. are very new.

People don't consider them hardcore and go play there generic shooters again (i like those too, but it's kinda old in many ways)

I welcome these new ways of playing games and these new genres (even the non games) cause they will expand the definition of gaming and with that the gaming community. Ofcourse i'm most curious what Mario Galaxy will be like.

I couldn't possibly agree more, thank you for putting into words how I've felt about gaming the last couple years. God of War has seriously got me back into gaming. I grew up playing all those same games (with the exception of Goonies 2, even then I wouldn't play movie games), and they were awesome. I always said to myself too, I wish they would put co-op into these games. Now they can, and they don't. Instead they are too busy making new map packs and such for the same genre of game. How about WOW on PS3, something like that.

I appreciate everyone's opinion. I did say that FPS's have grown on me. I actually like them, I'm just saying that every new game doesn't need to have that same style of play. I referred to 8 & 16-bit consoles, because developlers were really limited technically compared to todays standards. Yet, still games had that intangible quality about them, almost like a fun factor/replay type thing. I had a Master System & TurboGrafx16 too, but feel as if they weren't major enough to mention. Neo Geo was like $700 in 1993-94! Ok, so I didn't have that! But still their impacts paled in comparison to NES, SNES & Genesis. It's not about me having "played it all", but I've played enough to see that things have changed for the good or the bad. You can almost compare gaming with the music/entertainment business now. If a record is a hit, A&R's & Execs search for the next artist with the same kind of sound as the last artist. That's what the game industry suffers from now. Hell, I can't even remember the last new arcade game that had folks flocking to play it. Commercial is always healthy, but too much of commercialism can be a bad thing. Look at what too much commercialism has done to the Hip-Hop community.

Cooking mama, that sounds like an awsome game...90% of nintendo games seem like they are for 5 year olds.. like nintendogs... now what is that...?

I kind of agree to a point. I'm not really a fan of fps with few exeptions. I think it's just a trend that will die down. Remeber back in the sega days when Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter were big, then every other game after that was a fighting game (virtual fighter and capcom vs whoever). It's just a trend in gaming but there are other titles coming that should satisfy. I have faith that some developer in this next gen will reinvigorate other styles to different styles of gaming.

Whoever compared gaming to the music industry nailed it. FPS are like the mainstream shoved down your throat radio songs, while the better games are few and far between and get overlooked.
