Folding @ Home

Can someone please explain this Folding @ Home program for me.  I've heard bout how it is being used as cancer research, but don't quite understand the processes involved.

it simulates the folding of cells in our body to figure out what makes them mess up and cause cancer

im sure soemone else coudl put it in a more understandable sentence then myself
