Do you use the 720p or 1080i resolution on your TV?
I've been using 720p since I heard that progressive is better than interlaced, but I was wondering what everyone else's preferences were.

lol ps3 games do not support 1080i resolution only 720p so ur menus are 1080i and ur tv downscales to 720p automatic read the back of ps3 games 480/720p resolution is supported no 1080i or pbartman999O_o...uncharted? COD4? Ratchet and Clank? none of those support 1080i? riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight
I have a 1080p tv so idk why im in this thread lol.....you all should buy 1080p its amazing.aajohnny
BINGO! Me to. :)
720P shows 720 lines on screen every 1/60th of a second.
1080i shows 540 lines on screen every 1/60th of a second.Something like that, correct me if I'm wrong.

Sort of, technically, 1080i 60hz is eactly the same detail as 1080p at 30fps, it's just that the 30 frames are split into two fields, 540 each, then shown twice as fast to make you think you see full 1080. But in most cases, you guys don't have 1080i tvs, those are CRT based that are disappearing from store shelfs daily.
Most you guys are going with LCDs, and those are all progresive, not one can do 1080i, they accept 1080i. This means most have a native resolution of 1280*720 (720p) or the common 1366*768. Giving it 1080i will only mean the tv deinterlaces it, meaning trys to put the two 540 fileds back togethor, then downscales to 720p. It won't run in an interlaced mode, and there's no way to do 1920 pixels across for 1080i on a 720p tv that only has 1280 across. Thus, it's practically going to look just like 720p in the end, except limited to 30fps, and during fast motion most tvs won't deinterlace good enough so you might see as little as 540p during those moments. One reason 1080i is not a good option for games, as you do a lot of fast twitches and with no motion blur, that flaw stands out.
Still though, for a PS3, most games are either 720p or 1080p. If the game is 1080p, then the PS3 will default to 1080i first, but in most cases, games will run at 720p no matter what. Unless the game supports upscaling, which is even worse, turning 720p INTO 1080i has no benefit since it will only make it worse when your tv has to make it 720p again.
There can be some benefits by choosing 1080i for blu-ray movies, as most the time these tvs are slightly higher than 720p, usually 768p, so downscaling 1080i to that look slightly better than upscaling 720p to 768p. Yes, fast motion might not have a much detail, but heck, motion blur in movies will do the same at that point already. Kind of why using 1080i on a 1080p practically is 1080p and looks better than 720p And movies start at 24fps, so the 30fps 1080i limit is not a problem. Some rare 1080p tvs to perfect inverse teceline return 1080i HD back to 1080p with no loss.

Rainbow Six is 720p, it only has a software upscaler to do the job the ps3 can't, converting 720p to 1080i specifcially for those with older CRT 1080i tvs that don't support 720p input. As without it, many were forced to play at 480p instead, and still do with most games. So really no benefit choosing 1080i for that game unless you have a true 1080i CRT tv where that signal would be better. And it was a failure when the game came out, the 1080i output was worse than 720p, something was set wrong and it was avoided and maybe it's been fixed by now. Other games now have uspcalers, so just because the box says 1080i or 1080p it still might be just 720p upscaled.
lol i have rachet and clank and it supports 720p max check before you talk
bartman999
well you did say "ps3 games" you didnt say rachet and clank...so one would have assumed you mean all ps3 games
You can just leave 1080i and 720p on. THe PS3 can't upscale at will like the 360. So seeing how 90% of games are 720p, the PS3 will auto choose that, switching as it leaves the 1080i media bar. Putting in a Blu-ray movie will default to 1080i, the highest available. Though, now and then some games may force you to change things to 720p only if it has a bad upscaler that looks worse if it chooses 1080i. Or games that are true 1080p and choose to run at 1080i, but that's rare.
Well it depends on what I'm viewing. If it's a game, then I usually set it at 720p because it'll run smoother (or so I've heard), and I set it to 1080i when I watch a movie. But to be honest, I couldn't really tell the different when I set it to 720p and 1080i.Elviathan
The higher the resolution, the more cost in performance. So if a game can run at 1080p, and had slow downs, it might happen less if you set it to 720p and renders at that (not downscale 1080p to 720p, though that could add AA). And 1080i technically limits you to 30fps, as the signal is only 60hz, so it can only carry 60 half frames. While 720p at 60hz can do 60 full frames.

Nope cause in the Display Setup I have it set so it will display 480p 1080i cause mine cant do 720p
so the ps3 scales everythin but ps3 games
I can only play in 1080 if the Developer put support for 1080
so XMB Scales to 1080
Movies Scale to 1080
PS1/PS2 Games Scale to 1080
But PS3 Games dont
So not it dosent do it for you.
But I swear they better fix it.
