so i have the Wii and 360, but i LOVE my ps2 games, and i want to get last guardian and a few other ps3 exclusives and i could use a bluray player. i have an old ps2 phat that works great truly but the rumble gave out many years ago oddly enough. so my question is simple i DO care quite a bit about backwards compatability. ive read many OLD threads on the differences between models but i dont know where things stand today with the current firmware and what have you, beyond the basics.

The 80 gig is still kickin around it seems at some stores...which is all software emulation, i doubt at 300 it will be there for long, so i want to make a choice soon. i know the gold standard is the 60gig model, is it worth hunting this down used somewhere or whatever, or buyin it new at an elevated price? or should i just grab a 80gb new at 300?

I don't want the slim, i find it hideously ugly, and cheap looking, granted its lighter and could very well down the line run cooler, but it looks cheapo. but i digress its the BC that concerns me very much. so what would you guys suggest?

Sorry, but the later models of the 80GB PS3s do not include Backwards Compatabililty.

Chances are, the ones you've seen are newer models.

Ah i was afraid of this, geez what a bummer...i still think the old ps3 looks alot better, and 300 is the right price for me but geez, i guess that means i might have to consider hunting down a used 60gigger...

You'd probably have an easier time finding an older model of the 80GB with BC.

Well there is a rumor that Sony will give all models full BC through a firmware update, but that's just a rumor.

what about this scenario guys, there are a few gamestop refurbished models in the next state over (sadly none in mine) and with the free shipping code and taxes all added up i can get a refurb 60gb for 350 all said and done after taxes and shipped to me (Granted i cant view the system before i get it and i dont get the box etc). what do you think? iver never bought a refurb before and certainly not from gamestop but it IS an option.

At this point, not so sure. If this was true they should have announced it at their Gamescom conference. It's been too long now and they haven't taken any steps in that direction. In fact a Sony rep was just interviewed about this and said that b/c is not coming back because people don't want it. Which is BS IMO. I hope they bring b/c, I really hope they do. But at this point it looks very doubtful...

If the BC does mean that much then I would say go for that.

You could try a refurbished model but I would make sure you could get a warranty or something if it failed. If you aren't that interested in PS3 games except for like 2 or 3 then I wouldn't get the system and just stick with PS2. At this point in the PS3's life cycle I don't see why people are still complaining about backwards compatability. At the beginning of the PS3's life yeah sure but now? People act like PS2 is more important than the new games. If that is so then why buy a PS3? If your going to get a PS3. get it because you want to play PS3 games about 95% of the time and PS2 the other 5%.

i can name about 5-10 ps3 exclusives i want as well, plus i need a bluray player. but BC does matter to me, thats just how it is. i DO agree though that getting some sort of warranty is worth it. i just was unsure of gamestop refurbs, and the fact it voids sony's warranty bugs too, but its a good price for a fairly sought after model.

are there any ps3 quirks or things i should double check for when examining a unit (if able) beyond seeing it displayed and working etc...

sorry to double post, i actualy just got in contact with someone localy from craigslist who has kept his 60 gig in great condition (he doesnt have the box though :(. and is willing to sell it for 290$ with an extra controller (neither are the rumble kind sadly). If its in great condition as he says, i think it sounds like a heck of a deal for the 60 gig model, what do you guys think?
