While both are great and challenging games I prefer DMC, mainly because Dante flesh out character better while Ruy reminds mostly a mystery (not sorprising since he's a ninja). And also the fact that in DMC you still use all your equipment and items onto higher difficulties, while in Ninja Gaide you have to start from scratch.
I have both and NGS was is really a letdown compared to DMC. I love the DMC series and i bought NGS thinking that it would be better and DMC3 is waaaaayyy better then NGS. DMC4 is good but i'm still playing it so i'll reserve my judgement. But the replay value for NGS for me is terrible and I have no incentive to play it again or do the extra missions.
Whereas with DMC3 and more then likely DMC4 I was/will be playing through again and doing the bloody palace.
Depends... I've had more fun with DMC1 and DMC3 than any Ninja Gaiden game I've owned (NG, NGB, NGS). But when it comes to DMC4, I've had more fun with the NG games. I'd take Sigma over DMC4 as it stands, and I'm about 99.9% sure that NG2 will eat DMC4 alive. Glad I got a 360 too..
