I really don't like the game at all, it being linear is the least of its problems, I actually like that. Mostly bad characters, horrible storytelling, and the worse battle system Final Fantasy has ever had are much bigger issues to complain about.

I know its your opinion but i strongly disagree. The old Battle System in FF 7 8 9 had to go and they replaced it with a fun fast and strategic battle system.

I agree with everything you just said except for the part about the battle system. It's actually one of the best. The part that sucks is that you can't switch in between characters mid fight, and if the leader dies it's game over.

The battles don't even need me. Choosing auto should have just kept it playing on auto. All I am doing during fights is tapping X with one hand while watching videos or writing on the computer (I'm doing it right now. I am fighting a boss, that can't possibly beat me, while typing this and watching/listening to a Nostalgic Critic video. The boss battle are lengthy and awful. Battles take a long time due to the ridiculous amount of health enemies have, usually enemies that have no chance of even killing you if you have one person healing. The summons aren't fun to use. In battles with a lot of enemies you can't see what is going on with all the enemies and numbers until you kill a few. The allied AI goes from horrible to ok, sometimes doing things that don't even make sense (like I'm playing Persona 3 again). In most Shin Megami Tensei games it makes sense for Game Over when the party leader dies, in this it makes no sense and is just annoying since allied Medics don't treat you like you are special and focus heals on you. Not being able to move manually leads to stupid situations where an enemy will be doing AoE attacks and your characters keep running right next to each other so all get hit.

FF 7,8, and 9 had the old boring, no strategy, slow combat of old school RPGs but I don't see how this is better. All they have done is made the slow animations fast and added many new problems.

i love all the FF games for being so diverse and I really appreciate what they have done here. I actually have to pay attention more. I try to get 5 stars on each fight and I know I can't do that just using one paradigm, and mashing X. So I switch it up and try and make it exciting. I don't know if I could look away and just do auto battle. I think I tried it once and my main character died. Probably because I didn't have a healer. But I think the game is more of a challenge if you try and 5 star each of the fights which is what I try and do and no way you can do that without paradigm shifts and strategy.

That's cool, because I usually don't like open world games because they make me feel overwelmed, and I'm not sure what to do next

can someone please explain to me how they're advancing in the game simply by pressing x only? i'm in chapter 4 and getting smashed by the bad guys. i'm leveling up my char's crystal grid too. i have to switch paradigm during battles to win.. i buff up my chars and debuff the bad guys before attacking. the portion of the game where i had to play as sazh & vanille was tough. seriously.. where's all this talk about pressing x only coming from? are we playing the same game? did i accidently select hard mode? and like a few of the posters above.. i try to get the 5 stars.

could probably get buy with a full time healer and some sort of damage dealer and just mashing X.. but the fights will take longer and it will be boring and probably not many 5 star fights.

Honestly what you just said makes me want the game even less. I was gonna give it a try but after what you said it seems like a very big annoying pain in the butt. Probably another average rpg with crap gimicks thrown in to stretch the game out.
