I don't quite see the point of using a stand... I just have mine frestanding vertically and it seems completely stable.

what is supposed to be the benefit of standing it vertically in the first place? will there be an eventually malfunction leaving it horozontally?

College?!?! You had better bubble wrap it and lock it away so it doesn't explode lol Honestly, standing it on its own is stable enough, unless you plan on having a few friends over and jumping up and down besides it :P

It won't heatup as quick since the exhaust thing is on the top when it is vertical allowing all the heat to escape than get get trapped at the bottom

I haven't even thought of a stand because the way the console is shaped it stands on it's own edge fairly well.

thanks for the info. I didn't think it would really matter which way you position it.

I live in earthquake country (northern Cali) so I use the intec stand. It works pretty good. It almost doubles the base of the ps3 and has a controller hook in the back. The down side is it doesn't fit pefectly. You have to shift it slight to the right if you have a 60 gig and want access to the card readers.
